The Phenomenon of Camp and No Matter How Hard We Tried

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá fenoménem camp, který využívá jako nástroj pro interpretaci divadelní hry Doroty Masłowské s názvem Mezi náma dobrý a její stejnojmenné divadelní a filmové inscenace, jež režíroval Grzegorz Jarzyna. Na základě analýzy autorka obhajuje přítomnost campu v těchto vybraných dílech a poukazuje na jeho projevy napříč textovým, divadelním a filmovým médiem. Autorka se nejdříve zaměřuje na vymezení fenoménu, přičemž vychází z prvního uceleného shrnutí Susan Sontag, které vyšlo v českém překladu pod názvem Poznámky o fenoménu camp. Na základě tohoto eseje aktualizuje camp do současnosti. Zaměřuje se na vyvrácení tvrzení Sontag o apolitičnosti campu a jako oporu vlastní argumentace využívá knihu Láska k přehnanému Petera Demetera. Autorka dále vymezuje kontext tvorby Doroty Masłowské, Grzegorze Jarzyny a nastiňuje situaci polské literatury a polského divadla v době, kdy zkoumaná díla vznikla. V další části práce se věnuje analýze dramatického textu Mezi náma dobrý, prostřednictvím které ověřuje přítomnost campu – fenomén nachází ve výskytu principů jako je například nadsázka a s ní související subverze. Svoji interpretaci zároveň opírá o kontext tvorby Masłowské. V další fázi nastiňuje, že jsou campové promluvy v obou adaptacích zachovány, a proto už přistupuje k analýze divadelní a filmové inscenace prizmatem campu. Zjištění i v tomto případě dokládá kontextualizací děl Grzegorze Jarzyny. Práce tak ukazuje fenomén camp jako interpretační nástroj schopný reflexe společenskopolitických problémů a poukazuje na možné využití campu v současnosti.

Abstract:

The present thesis deals with the phenomenon of camp, which is used as a tool for the interpretation of Dorota Masłowska's play No Matter How Hard We Tried and her eponymous theatre and film productions, both directed by Grzegorz Jarzyna. Based on her analysis, the author argues the presence of camp in these selected works and highlights its manifestations across the media of text, theatre, and film. Firstly, the author focuses on defining the phenomenon, drawing on Susan Sontag's first comprehensive summary, which was published in Czech translation as Poznámky o fenoménu camp. Following on from this essay, she attempts to update camp for the present. She aims to refute Sontag's claims about the apolitical nature of camp, using Peter Demeter's Láska k přehnanému to support her hypothesis. The author further defines the context of the works of Dorota Masłowska and Grzegorz Jarzyna, and outlines the situation of Polish literature and Polish theatre at the time when the respective works were created. In the following section of her thesis, she analyses the dramatic text No Matter How Hard We Tried, verifying the presence of camp; a phenomenon she finds in the continuous appearance of principles such as hyperbole, or the related subversion. She conducts her analysis with the context of Masłowska's work in mind. In the next section, she argues that the so-called camp dialogues are preserved in the theatre and film productions, and therefore she may examine both adaptations through the prism of camp. She is able to illustrate her findings also in contextualizing the works of Grzegorz Jarzyna. The present thesis thus shows the phenomenon of camp as an interpretative tool capable of reflecting on socio-political problems and suggests the possibility of updating camp to the present.
