Dermatoglyphic indices: review and analysis of the application

Abstract:

Tato práce představuje dermatoglyfické indexy, jejich použití a zabývá se celkovou výpovědní hodnotu této metody při hodnocení otisků prstů v dermatoglyfice. Kritizovanou vlastností dermatoglyfických indexů je potlačení specifik jednotlivých prstů z důvodu slučování všech deseti prstů při výpočtu. Cílem této bakalářské práce bylo na vybraném vzorku srovnat hodnoty dermatoglyfických indexů pro všech 10 prstů s hodnotami těchto indexů pro jednotlivé prsty a posoudit dopad slučování prstů na výsledné dermatoglyfické indexy. Materiál tvořilo 252 sad (10 prstů jednoho člověka) otisků prstů tří populací: Lužických Srbů (96 sad), české populace (80 sad) a vietnamské populace (76 sad). Byly vypočteny dermatoglyfické indexy (Dankmeijerův index, Deltový index, Furuhatův index, Index vzorové intenzity, Pollův index) pro všech 10 prstů dohromady i pro každý prst samostatně. Grafické srovnání ukázalo, že hodnota indexu pro všechny prsty dohromady stírá variabilitu v rozložení vzorů mezi jednotlivými prsty. Z celkových výsledků vyplývá, že slučováním všech prstů při výpočtu dermatoglyfických indexů se ztrácí cenné údaje o variabilitě rozložení vzorů na jednotlivých prstech, což pravděpodobně omezuje rozlišovací možnosti tradiční dermatoglyfické metodologie.

Abstract:

This thesis presents Dermatoglyphic indices, their use and deals with the total redeemable value of this method when assessing fingerprints in Dermatoglyphics. The criticized attribute of Dermatoglyphic indices is the suppression of the specifics of the individual fingers due to the merging of all ten fingers together in calculation. The aim of this bachelor thesis was to compare the values of Dermatoglyphic indices for all 10 fingers with the values of these indices for individual fingers on a selected sample and to evaluate the impact of finger merging on resulting Dermatoglyphic indices. The material consisted of 252 fingerprint sets (10 fingers of one person) of three populations: the Lusatian Serbs (96 sets), the Czech population (80 sets) and the Vietnamese population (76 sets). Dermatoglyphic indices (Dankmeijer index, Delta index, Furuhata index, Pattern intensity index, Poll index) were calculated for all 10 fingers together and then for each finger individually. A graphical comparison showed that the index value for all fingers together wiped out the variability in pattern distribution between fingers. As the overall results demonstrate, combining all fingers together in the calculation of Dermatoglyphic indices leads to a loss of valuable data about the variability of pattern distribution on individual fingers, which is likely to limit the distinctive potential of traditional Dermatoglyphic methodology.
