Social Changes in Female World as Represented in Some Novels by Fyfield

Abstract:

Cílem mé diplomové práce bylo sledovat změny a vývoj v ženském světě a následně to, jak se tyto změny odráží ve třech vybraných románech Frances Fyfieldové. Zaměřila jsem se na problémy symbolizované ženskými postavami těchto děl a ilustrovala změny v ženských sociálních rolích v rodině i společnosti od počátku dvacátého století. Nastínila jsem také historii a vývoj kriminální literatury, jejíž představitelkou je i Fyfieldová, zdůraznila jsem ženské spisovatelky a prvky jejich děl. Zvážila jsem jak různé pohledy Fyfieldové na manželství a vzathy, tak i různorodost ženských názorů na sociální role. Na postavách Sarah Fortunové, Helen Westové, a Elisabeth Manserové jsem ukázala zdráhavý postoj moderních, vzdělaných profesionálek k manželství. Projednala jsem také situace a štěstí vdaných žen Emily Eliotové, Cath Boyceové, Jennifer Pardoové a Amy Pettyové. Zdůraznila jsem rovnost mezi muži a ženami v partnerstvích a odhalila tendence typické pro moderní vztahy – jako například přátelství, společné zájmy a povinnosti v údržbě domácnosti. Poukázala jsem však také na přetrvávající tradiční model rodiny a manželství i problémy jako násilí na ženách.

Abstract:

The aim of my thesis was to trace the changes and development in female world and their reflection in three selected works by Frances Fyfiled. I focused on the issues represented by the female characters in these novels, and commented on the changes of women's roles both within the domestic sphere and the society since the beginning of the twentieth century. I also outlined the history and development of crime fiction, as Fyfield is a representative of the genre, emphasising the female writers and features of their works. I examined Fyfield's different portrayals of marriage and relationships as well as the variation of women's opinions on social roles. Through the characters of Sarah Fortune, Helen West, and Elisabeth Manser, I demonstrated the reluctant attitude of modern, educated professionals towards marriage. I also discussed the situations and happiness of married women – Emily Eliot, Cath Boyce, Jennifer Pardoe, and Amy Petty. I highlighted the equality between men and women within partnerships, discovering tendencies typical of modern relationships – such as friendliness, common interests, and shared responsibilities in housekeeping. But I also pointed out the prevailing model of traditional family and marriage, as well as problems such as violence towards women.
