Transdermal Absorption from Emulsions with Encapsulated Components of Essential Oils

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá přípravou Pickeringových emulzí s obsahem složek esenciálních olejů, jejich charakterizací a následným hodnocením transdermální absorpce. Teoretická část je věnována faktorům ovlivňujícím transdermální absorpci, možným cestám průniku formulací aplikovaných na kůži a metodám testování transdermální absorpce. Popsány jsou rovněž esenciální oleje zejména z hlediska jejich funkce jako urychlovačů absorpce. V neposlední řadě je pozornost věnována přípravě a možnému využití Pickeringových emulzí. Praktická část práce se věnuje přípravě Pickeringových emulzí stabilizovaných nanokrystalickou celulózou se dvěma složkami esenciálních olejů: cinnamaldehydem a limonenem. Připravené formulace jsou charakterizovány fyzikálně-chemickými metodami a je hodnocena jejich stabilita v čase. V poslední části práce jsou formulace podrobeny in vitro testu transdermální absorpce.

Abstract:

This thesis describes the process of preparation of the Pickering emulsions that contain components of essential oils. These emulsions are further characterised and evaluated for their potential for transdermal absorption. The theoretical part characterises the factors with the influence on the transdermal absorption, potential ways in which the formulations may penetrate the skin upon application and methods suitable for measuring the transdermal absorption. The potential of essential oils to act as accelerators of the absorption process is also introduced. Lastly, this part delineates the process of preparation as well as potential applications of the Pickering emulsions. The research part introduces the preparation process of the Pickering emulsions stabilised by the nanocrystalline cellulose with two essential oil components: cinnamaldehyde and limonene. Formulations that are produced are described and characterised using physical-chemical methods and their stability over time is evaluated as well. In the final section of this thesis the formulations are tested in the in vitro test of transdermal absorption.
