Air Temperature Fluctuations in the Czech Republic in the Period of Instrumental Measurements

Abstract:

V posledních letech je často diskutována otázka, nakolik je pozorované globální oteplování výsledkem přirozeného kolísání podnebí a do jaké míry je podmíněno činností člověka. K pochopení zpětných vazeb v klimatickém systému a odhadu vývoje budoucího klimatu se stále více využívá klimatických modelů. K validaci výstupů těchto modelů a k analýze kolísání klimatu v delším období (století až tisíciletí) je však nutné mít k disposici dostatečně dlouhé řady meteorologických prvků měřených na stanicích. Tato práce se věnuje analýze měsíčních průměrných teplot vzduchu na území České republiky v období přístrojových měření (1771-2000). Autorem bylo z dostupných zdrojů sesbíráno téměř 200 řad s délkou měření alespoň 20 let. Aby byly analýzy založené na klimatologických řadách smysluplné, je nutné, aby řady byly tzv. homogenní, tzn. aby jejich kolísání bylo způsobeno pouze kolísáním počasí a podnebí. Značná pozornost proto byla věnována homogenizaci použitých časových řad. Vzhledem k tomu, že jsou metadata ve většině případů neúplná a navíc výsledky statistických testů většinou nedovolují vyvozovat jednoznačné závěry o nalezených nehomogenitách, byl zde navržen a použit přístup, díky němuž je možné zvýšit spolehlivost určení nehomogenit v řadách. Homogenní řady 174 stanic byly následně podrobeny analýze. Pomocí korelační analýzy byly hodnoceny vazby mezi jednotlivými stanicemi, byla sledována změna těchto vazeb v čase i prostoru. Dále byla analyzována statistická struktura řad a opět její změna v prostoru i čase, včetně analýzy trendů. Aplikací vícerozměrných metod pro redukci dimenze dat jako je shluková analýza a analýza hlavních komponent byly v řadách hledány složky, které se nejvíce podílí na rozptylu řad. Z homogenních řad byla dále vytvořena průměrná řada České republiky, která byla porovnávána s průměrnou řadou severní polokoule. Pomocí spektrální analýzy (MESA) byly zkoumány statisticky významné cykly a jejich podíl na rozptylu v řadách. Vícenásobná lineární regrese byla využita k hledání vazeb teploty vzduchu s klimatotvornými faktory, pro které byl odhadnut odpovídající teplotní signál. Řady v takovém rozsahu doposud v České republice zpracovány nebyly. Pro homogenizaci časových řad byl použit software AnClim, pro zpracování řad a část analýzy zase databázový software ProClimDB. Oba softwary byly vyvinuty autorem a jsou zájemcům k disposici (http://www.klimahom.com/software).

Abstract:

In recent years, among the most often discussed questions belongs to which extent observed global warming is the result of natural climate fluctuations and how much it is influenced by human activity. For understanding of the climate system feedbacks and estimation of future climate evolution, climate models are widely used. For model output validations and analysis of climate fluctuations in long time scales (from centuries to millenniums) it is however necessary to possess sufficiently long time series of meteorological elements measured at stations (or proxy data). This thesis is devoted to the analysis of monthly air temperature averages over the area of the Czech Republic during the period of instrumental measurements (1771-2000). The author collected almost 200 series with minimum length of 20 years using most of the available resources. In order to provide meaningful climate change studies it is important that the fluctuations detected in the analysed time series are caused solely by climate variations. That is why considerable attention was given to the homogenisation of all included time series. Since station's metadata are rarely complete and moreover statistical test results do not allow accepting found inhomogeneities without doubts (e.g. thanks to big noise in the series), some techniques were sought, proposed and used in this work leading to more reliable inhomogeneity estimation. Subsequently, homogeneous series of 174 stations were analysed. Using correlation analysis, relations among individual stations were assessed, together with its change of this relation in time and space. Further, the series statistical structure was analysed, again with its change both in space and time. The most important components explaining series variance were searched by applying multidimensional methods for data dimension reduction such as cluster and principal component analysis. Using the homogenized series, average temperature series for the Czech Republic was calculated, then compared to averaged series of the northern hemisphere. Statistically significant cycles and their share on series variance were also investigated by means of spectrum analysis (MESA). Multiple linear regression was applied for finding relation of air temperature to climate forcing and the appropriate maximum signals (influence on air temperature) were also evaluated. For homogenisation, the AnClim software, and for data processing ProClimDB database software, developed by the author, have been used.
