Motives of Students for Leaving the Study of Religions with the Focus on a Tension between University Studies and Student’s Spiritual Identity

Abstract:

Práce se věnuje analýze konkrétních případů, kdy studium religionistiky svým vědeckým přístupem ke zkoumání náboženských jevů může u studentů způsobovat tenzi mezi studiem a jejich náboženskou identitou a na tuto tenzi se hlouběji zaměřuje v kontextu jejího projevování při rozhodnutí studentů ukončit studium religionistiky. Hlavní výzkumné otázky jsou, zdali a jakým způsobem se projevuje u bývalých studentů oboru religionistiky tenze mezi studiem a jejich vlastní náboženskou identitou, jak se tato tenze utváří, s čím souvisí a jakou roli hraje jako jeden z motivů při jejich rozhodnutí opustit studium. Teoretické uchopení problematiky se opírá o klasický sociální konstruktivismus Bergera a Luckmanna, Weidmanův model socializace do akademického prostředí vysokých škol a Tintův teoretický model retence studentů na vysoké škole. Výzkumná část prostřednictvím kvalitativní analýzy polostrukturovaných rozhovorů se 7 bývalými studenty oboru Religionistika na Filozofické fakultě Masarykovy univerzity v Brně prozkoumává vztah mezi vlivem studia na osobní vztah k náboženství a motivem odchodu z oboru z důvodu tenze mezi studiem a vlastní náboženskou identitou studentů. Příčiny tvorby tenze pak práce spatřuje v odděleném vztahu výzkumník – objekt (náboženství), kdy se tenze stává výsledkem socializačních procesů vědecké racionalizace a objektivizace. Ty mohou u studentů vytvářet pocit „odkouzlení“ objektu, ke kterému mají osobní vztah, a jeho přetváření na kriticky rozebíraný a neosobní analytický koncept. Výzkum tak poskytuje informace o utváření vzájemného vztahu vědy a náboženství v současné moderní společnosti a návrhy na způsoby výuky religionistiky, které by mohly pomoci studentům se lépe s tenzí vyrovnávat.

Abstract:

This work examines specific cases in which the Study of Religions may cause tension in students between their studies and their religious identity due to its scientific approach to exploring religious phenomena, and focuses on this tension in the context of students’ decision to drop out of studying. The main research questions are: whether and how was the tension between their studies and their religious identity manifested in the former students’ decisions to leave the study of religions, how is the tension created and what role does it play as one of the motives of their decision to leave the study? Theoretical approach is based on the classic social constructivism of Berger and Luckmann, Weidman’s conceptual model of undergraduate socialization and Tinto’s theoretical model of student retention. The research part explores the relationship between the impact of studying on the personal relationship to religion and a motive for leaving the field because of the tension between studies and religious identity of students through a qualitative analysis of interviews with seven former students of Institute for the Study of Religions at Faculty of Arts, Masaryk University in Brno. The causes of tension are seen in the separated relationship of a researcher and the object of research in which the tension results from the socialization processes of scientific rationalization and objectification. That can create an impression of "disenchantment" of the object among students to which they have a personal relationship, and its transformation to a critically analysed and impersonal analytical concept. This research will provide information relating to the shaping of relationship between science and religion in the modern society and some suggestions for methods of teaching the study of religions that could help students overcome the tension.
