First Language Acquisition: A Comparative Study of English and Hungarian

Abstract:

Ústředními tématy této diplomové práce jsou osvojování mateřského jazyka a jazykový vývoj u dětí v anglickém a maďarském jazyce. Cílem teto práce bylo poukázat na to, že osvojování mateřského jazyka nezávisí na jednotlivých jazycích, ale má obecnější charakter. Největší vliv na osvojení mateřského jazyka u dětí a jednotlivá stadia k tomu vedoucí má kognitivní vývoj dítěte. V první části diplomové práce je představen přehled teorií, které vysvětlují proces osvojování mateřského jazyka. Následující část se zabývá studiem vývojových stádií vedoucích k úspěšnému osvojení jazyka. Hlavní část diplomové práce je zaměřena na studii osvojování otázek a negací v anglickém a maďarském jazyce. Všechna data použita a analyzována v práci pochází od čtyř dětí, dvou anglických a dvou maďarských, jejichž lingvistická produkce je dostupná online v databázi CHILDES. Analýza příkladů otázek a negací vyslovených vybranými dětmi dokázala vysoký stupeň podobnosti, čímž se prokázal obecný charakter osvojování mateřského jazyka, který není závislý na jednotlivých jazycích.

Abstract:

The present thesis deals with first language acquisition and child language development in English and Hungarian. The aim of this work was to demonstrate that first language acquisition is not dependent on individual languages but is of more general character. What has the major impact on the acquisition of the child´s first language and the individual stages leading to it is the child´s cognitive development. The first part of the thesis presents an overview of the theories explaining the process of first language acquisition. The following section of this work is devoted to the study of the developmental stages leading to successful acquisition of a language. The major part of the thesis is devoted to the study of question and negation acquisition in English and Hungarian. All the data used and analysed in the work come from four children, two English and two Hungarian, whose linguistic production is available online in the CHILDES database. The analysis of the examples of questions and negations uttered by the selected children showed high level of similarity thus demonstrating the general character of first language acquisition which is not dependent on individual languages.
