Gamblers view on luck as the cause of uncontrollable events

Abstract:

This work deals with the difference in luck attribution between the Czech gamblers and the control group. There is a connection between specific gambling rituals and view on luck as a power able to influence the result of the game. The belief in luck is considered to be one of the factors contributing to maintainance of gambling behavior. In order to find out difference in belief in luck and attribution of luck between czech gamblers and control goup, pathological gamblers were compared with people not participating in hazard games (and of the same age, education, gender and nationality). A questionaire was administred to all participant containing the Belief in luck and luckiness scale and 14 stories of uncontrollable events. Participants choose from nonmaterial causes (luck, chance, god, destiny) one they believe it to fit the best. Results has shown a significant difference between gamblers and control goupr in the way of attributing the causes. Control group has chosen significantly more „chance“ option meanwhile gamblers opted for luck, God and destiny. There was no significant difference in explicitely formulated belief in luck.

Abstract:

Táto práca sa zameriava na zistenie rozdielu vo vnímaní šťastia ako príčiny nekontrolovateľných udalostí medzi českými hráčmi a kontrolnou skupinou. Vykonávanie rituálov u hráčov behom hazardnej hry sa dáva do súvislosti s vierou v šťastie ako silou ovplyvňujúcu výsledok hry. Viera v šťastie sa zároveň považuje za jeden z faktorov, ktoré prispievajú k udržovaniu hráčskeho chovania. 30 pacientov liečiacich sa pre patologické hráčstvo v psychiatrických nemocniciach bolo porovnaných s kontrolnou skupinou, ktorá hazardné hry nehrá, ale pritom rovnakého veku, vzdelania, pohlavia, národnosti vo viere v šťastie a spôsobe kauzálneho usudzovania. Participantom bol administrovaný dotazník obsahujúci škálu viery v šťastia a 14 príbehy nekontrolovateľných udalostí, ku ktorým participanti priradili jednu z externých nestabilných príčin (šťastie, náhoda, Boh, osud). Výsledky ukázali, že gambleri sa významne odlišovali od kontrolnej skupiny v priraďovaní príčin. Kontrolná skupina priraďovala príčinu významne viacej náhode než gambleri. Tí volili viac šťastie, Boha a osud. V explicitne vyjadrenej viere v šťastie sa však hráči od kontrolnej skupiny nelíšili.
