A complex translation analysis of a professional musical text

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to carry out a complex translation analysis of a professional musical text and to reveal and describe the strategies and methods used during translation. The analysed material is the monograph Leoš Janáček by Jaroslav Vogel which was translated from Czech into English by Geraldine Thomsen-Muchová. The theoretical part deals with the principles of a text analysis and the practical part contains the analysis itself based on the model by Christiane Nord. It has been found out that a frequent translation method is omission of information. The translator also used for example the strategies of explicitation, specification, generalization, or translation by a paraphrase, and some new information were added.

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce je provést komplexní překladatelskou analýzu odborného hudebního textu a odhalit a popsat strategie a postupy použité při překladu. Analyzovaným materiálem je monografie Leoš Janáček od Jaroslava Vogela, kterou z českého do anglického jazyka přeložila Geraldine Thomsen-Muchová. Teoretická část se zabývá principy textové analýzy a praktická část obsahuje samotnou analýzu založenou na modelu Christiany Nordové. Bylo zjištěno, že častým překladatelským postupem je vynechání informace. Dále překladatelka použila například strategie explicitace, specifikace, generalizace nebo překlad opisem, a některé nové informace přidala.
