Opus Dei and Its Relation to Human Body

Abstract:

Opus Dei vzniklo v roce 1928 ve Španělsku. Jeho zakladatel, katolický kněz Josemaría Escrivá, postavil svou vizi na myšlence laického apoštolátu. Podle něj jsou všichni lidé syny a dcerami Božími, takže mají stejnou šanci dojít svatosti. Tato myšlenka byla na svou dobu velice neobvyklá, neboť postavila na roveň život v manželství životu v celibátu, tedy vyrovnala na stejnou úroveň postavení laika i kněze. Cílem mé práce bylo přiblížit a popsat vztah Opus Dei k lidskému tělu, jejímž projevem je i kontroverzní praxe tělesného sebeumrtvování, k níž prelatura používá tzv. nástrojů pokání – důtek a cilicia. Mimo jiné jsem v práci vytvořila také typologii umrtvování, které probíhá na aktivní a pasivní rovině, stejně jako na psychické a fyzické rovině. Snažila jsem se také tuto praxi popsat jako součást praxe katolické církve, nikoli jako samostatný element fungující pouze v prelatuře. V další části práce se pak věnuji postavení ženy ve společnosti v kontextu členství v Opus Dei. Snažila jsem se objasnit, že žena zde není chápána pouze ve své tradiční roli matky, jak je Dílu často vytýkáno, ale také jako rovnocenný protějšek a partner muže, jehož pohled ve společnosti chybí. Na druhou stranu jsem však ukázala, že i v této otázce existují určité rozpory, a to především v postavení numerářských asistentek, o nichž členové Opus Dei prohlašují, že jsou velice vážené a nepostradatelné pro chod Díla, ale bývalí členové i ostatní kritici považují právě jejich postavení za jeden z důkazů nerovnoprávnosti pohlaví a protiženského postoje, který panuje uvnitř organizace.

Abstract:

Opus Dei was founded in Spain in 1928. Its founder, a catholic priest Josemaría Escrivá, based his vision on the idea of a laic apostolate. According to him, all people are sons and daughters of God and therefore have equal chances of reaching sanctity. The idea was very unusual for that time, as it puts the life in marriage on the same level as life in celibacy, thus equates the positions of laymen and priests. The goal of my work was to clear up and describe the relation of Opus Dei to the human body, the demonstration of which is also a controversial practice of corporal mortification. To that practice, the prelature members use the so-called instruments of penance – the cilice and the discipline. I also set up a typology of mortification, which appears on both active and passive levels as well as on mental and physical levels. I also tried to describe this practice as a part of the Catholic Church, not as a separate element used in the prelature only. In the next part of my work, I paid attention to the position of women in the society on the background of Opus Dei membership. I tried to clarify that a woman is not only seen in her traditional role of a mother, which for the Prelature is often reproached, but also as an equal counterpart and partner to man, whose point of view the society lacks. On the other hand I pointed out that there are also some contradictions in this question. Above all in the position of numerary assistants, whose indispensableness and esteem is claimed by the Opus Dei members, but whose position is considered one of the evidences of discrimination and anti-woman bearings in the organization by ex-members and other critics.
