Parents and Children in the period of emerging adulthood: how it looks from both sides

Abstract:

Cílem práce je popsat a vzájemně srovnat pohledy rodičů a jejich dětí v období vynořující se dospělosti na jejich vzájemný vztah a přinést pohled rodičů, který ve výzkumech na toto téma je spíše vzácnější. Teorie se zabývá především proměnou vztahu mezi rodičem a dítětem z perspektivy získávání autonomie v kontextu zachování kvality vztahu a vlivem přechodu do dospělosti na vztah rodiče a dítěte. Práce analyzuje data získaná od 234 matek a 141 otců ve střední dospělosti, doplněná o vybraná data od 274 jejich potomků ve věku 20-32 let. Výsledky prokázaly zejména vliv přijímání psychologických charakteristik dospělosti dítětem na vzájemný vztah s rodičem a v tomto směru malou důležitost demografických milníků na cestě k dospělosti. Dále se potvrdila souvislost sledovaných aspektů vztahu mezi rodičem a dítětem, a to především autonomie v rozhodování, emoční blízkosti a rodičovské podpory. Částečně se podařilo i přímo porovnat pohledy rodičů a dětí, zejména v oblasti vnímané dospělosti dítěte a autonomie v rozhodování.

Abstract:

The main aims of this thesis are to describe and compare parents´ and emerging adult´s perspectives on their mutual relationship and to present rather rare parental point of view about their relationship with children in this age. Theory mainly describes changes in the relationship between parent and adult child from autonomy-relatedness perspective and also how is their relationship influenced by transition to adulthood. Research analyzes data from 234 mothers and 141 fathers in middle adulthood and chosen data from 274 their offspring in the age range of 20 – 32 years. Results mainly prove the influence of accepting psychological characteristics of adulthood by child on the mutual relationship with parent. Demographical milestones (as finishing school or have a romantic partner) have no considerable importance. Connections between observed aspects of relationship were validated, especially between decision-making autonomy, emotional closeness and parental support. Partially, we have directly compared parents´ and emerging adult´s perspectives on the relationship, especially in decision-making autonomy and perceived adulthood of child.
