Abstract:

Disertační práce s názvem Moral and Political Implications of urbanism se zabývá oblastí morální filozofie, politické filozofie a filozofie urbanismu. Práce se snaží najít odpovědět na otázky, zda má filozofie urbanismu morální a politické implikace, a pokud ano, tak jaké. V práci dokládám, že filozofie urbanismu nabízí pestrou nabídku implikací pro morální filozofii a má rovněž politické implikace, které mají svůj původ v Prinzově morální teorii zkombinované s převládajícím architektonickým názorem, že „nejprve formujeme města, a poté tato města formují nás“. Důležitým východiskem práce je fakt, že se čím dál více lidí stěhuje do měst a predikce jsou takové, že by v blízké budoucnosti měla většina obyvatel planety žít právě ve městech. Východiskem práce je negace představy o tom, jak města jako svébytné entity fungují a jak jsou utvářeny. Namítám, že jen málo měst je plánováno takzvaným „value-empty type of urbanism“, tedy takovým městským plánováním, které se nesnaží prosadit konkrétní ideologie a hodnoty. Tento typ plánování je pro mou práci zbytečný a právě díky tomuto vymezení se mi podařilo zúžit badatelský okruh pouze na ty případy městského plánování, na kterých lze zkoumat ideologii a hodnoty v pozadí – na takzvaný „value-setting type of urbanism“­.

Abstract:

The dissertation called Moral and Political Implications of Urbanism focus on the field of moral philosophy, political philosophy and philosophy of urbanism. The work seeks to answer the questions whether the philosophy of urbanism has moral and political implications, and if so, which ones. In this work I claim that the philosophy of urbanism offers a diverse range of implications for moral philosophy and also has political implications that originate in Prinz's moral theory combined with the prevailing architectural view that "first we shape cities, and then these cities shape us". An important starting point of the work is the fact that more and more people are moving to cities and the predictions are that in the near future most of the planet's inhabitants would live in cities. The starting point of the work is the negation of the idea of ​​how cities function as distinct entities and how they are formed. I argue that only few cities are planned by the so-called "value-empty type of urbanism" – an urban planning that does not seek to enforce specific ideologies and values. This type of planning is unnecessary for my work, and thanks to this definition I managed to focus only on those cases of urban planning in which ideological and moral background ​​can be examined - the so-called value-setting type of urbanism.
