Blockchain as a trusted intermediary for data integrity validation

Abstract:

Je běžné, že společnosti chtějí mít jistotu, že jejich data, která získávají od poskytovatelů cloudových služeb, jsou přesná a že s nimi nebylo manipulováno. V tomto ohledu musí společnosti často důvěřovat poskytovateli služeb, zejména jeho poctivosti, že přizná porušení integrity dat, o kterém nemusí ani vědět. K vyřešení tohoto problému práce zkoumá možnosti využití blockchainu k ověření integrity dat a navrhuje dvě metody k ukládání zákaznických dat pomocí smart-contractu na blockchainu. První přístup je založen na hašování dat a druhý na šifrování dat. Vhodný je však pouze přístup založený na hašování dat, protože přístup založený na šifrování dat není škálovatelný z hlediska transakčních nákladů. Dále je proveden výběr nejvhodnějšího blockchainu pro ukládání zákaznických dat, v němž jako nejlepší vychází blockchain Solana. Dále je implementován smart-contract, který umožňuje ověřování integrity dat pomocí metody založené na hašování. Implementováno je také klientské rozhraní, které uživatelům umožňuje komunikovat s smart-contractem a snadno provádět ověřování integrity. Nakonec je metoda ověřování integrity vyhodnocena pomocí několika scénářů, z nichž jeden ukazuje, že běžný audit trail systém by nebyl dostatečný k odhalení manipulace s daty. Implementovaná metoda také ukazuje, že dokáže odhalit manipulaci s daty, ale nedokáže této manipulaci nebo ztrátě dat zabránit. Metoda nicméně může zajistit větší důvěru mezi zákazníky a poskytovateli cloudových služeb, pokud jde o integritu dat, protože se nemusí spoléhat na poctivost společností třetích stran, které tyto systémy pro ověřování integrity dat poskytují.

Abstract:

It is common for companies to want to be sure that the data they obtain from cloud service providers are accurate and have not been tampered with. In this regard, companies often have to trust the service provider, especially its honesty, to admit breaches of data integrity, which they may not even be aware of. To solve this, the work researches the possibilities of using blockchain to validate data integrity and proposes two approaches to storing customer data in a smart contract on a blockchain. The first approach is based on data hashing, and the second is based on data encryption. However, only the approach based on data hashing is viable because the data encryption-based approach does not scale in terms of transaction costs. Next, the selection of the most suitable blockchain to store customer data is carried out, in which the Solana blockchain comes out as the best. Further, a smart contract that enables data integrity validation using a hash-based method is implemented. Also implemented is a client interface that allows users to communicate with the smart contract and perform integrity validation easily. Finally, the hash-based integrity validation method is evaluated using several scenarios, one of which shows a regular audit trail system would not be sufficient to detect data tampering. The implemented method also shows it can detect data tampering, but it cannot prevent this tampering or loss of data from happening. Nevertheless, the method can provide more trust between customers and cloud service providers regarding data integrity as they do not have to rely on the honesty of third-party companies that provides data integrity validation systems.
