Changes in the habitat preferences of Gammarus fossarum during the drying up of the stream

Abstract:

Cílem této práce bylo zpracování literární rešerše k biologii druhu blešivec potoční Gammarus fossarum Koch, 1835 a jeho habitatovým preferencím. Téma bylo zpracováno i s ohledem na změny v chování druhu během vysychání a následné rekolonizace. V praktické části práce byla sledována sezónní dynamika populace G. fossarum na Gránickém potoce u Znojma (2,5 nad ústím) v průběhu roku 2005 (5. 4.-11. 11.). V tomto roce došlo dvakrát v letním období k vyschnutí toku. Odběry byly prováděny kvantitativně Kubíčkovým bentometrem ze 6 odběrových míst tvořených třemi různými páry habitatů označených jako břehy, peřeje a tůně ve 2 - 4 týdenních intervalech. Při každém odběru byla měřena následující abiotická data pro každý habitat zvlášť: rychlost proudu u dna a ve 40 % hloubky a hloubka vody;. Pro celý potok byla měřena teplota vody, nasycení vody kyslíkem, pH, vodivost a teplota vzduchu. Následně byly vyhodnoceny změny habitatových preferencí druhu G. fossarum na jednotlivých habitatech v průběhu roku, zejména při vysychání. Dále byly zhodnoceny rozdíly abundance mezi habitaty při jednotlivých termínech odběrů v závislosti na abiotických faktorech, které je ovlivňovaly. Výsledky byly porovnány s výzkumy, které již byly na podobné téma provedeny. Abundance blešivců na jednotlivých habitatech v rámci jednoho odběrového data byly v některých termínech ovlivněny obsahem CPOM, FPOM, POM, hloubkou vody, rychlostí proudu u dna a drsností substrátu. Celkově bylo v rámci sezóny nejvyšší průměrné abundance dosaženo na habitatu tůň 1, dále oba břehy a tůň 2. Nejméně osídleny byly v průměru obě peřeje. Byl také prokázán fatální vliv vyschnutí na populaci studovaného druhu jelikož došlo na všech habitatech k snížení abundancí oproti abundancím před vyschnutími, a to až o dva řády. Již mezi oběma vyschnutími v létě byly abundance velmi nízké.

Abstract:

The aim of this study was to carry out a bibliographic search for the biology of species Gammarus fossarum Koch, 1835 and its habitat preferences. I also focused on changes in the species’ preferences in the course of drying up of the stream and during the following recolonisation. In the practical part of the work I studied seasonal changes in population of G. fossarum in the Gránický brook (2.5 km above the confluence of the brook with the River Dyje) near the town of Znojmo in 2005 (from 5th April to 11th November). The stream dried up twice in the summer 2005. The quantitative samples were taken by Kubíček benthometer in six places, comprising three pairs of mesohabitats (the banks, rapids, and pools) in the intervals of 2 to 4 weeks. Following physicochemical parameters were measured for each mesohabitat: velocity of the current on the bottom and in 40 % of the total depth; depth of water. The water temperature, dissolved oxygen, pH, conductivity and air temperature were measured in the whole brook. The changes in preferences of Gammarus fossarum were interpreted for each type of mesohabitat during the year, especially in the course of drying up. The differences in abundance between habitats impacted by abiotic factors were evaluated for each sampling date. The obtained results were compared with results from previous research projects. The abundances of gammarids in each mesohabitats within individual sampling date were influenced on some of the dates by the content of CPOM, FPOM, POM, water depth, current velocity on the bottom, and substrate roughness. The highest average abundance within the sampling season was reached in mesohabitat pool 1, followed by that on both banks and in the pool 2. The lowest average abundances were in both rapids. The fatal impact of drought on the population of Gammarus fossarum was confirmed, considering the fact that the decrease in abundances in all mesohabitats in comparison with the abundances before the drought was by two orders of magnitude. The abundances between the two summer droughts were already very low.
