When a Woman Kills. A Discourse Analysis of the Articles in Lidové noviny about the Case of Romana Z.

Abstract:

Předkládaná bakalářská práce se zabývá často opomíjeným tématem kriminality žen. Na základě 20 článků Lidových novin, které informovaly o vraždě dětí spáchané Romanou Z. v září 2011, zkoumá mediální obraz ženy, která spáchala násilný trestný čin – vraždu, a následně byla odsouzena na doživotí. Cílem práce je pokusit se identifikovat v mediálních výpovědích dominantní diskurz, odhalit disciplinační a normalizační praktiky, a také rozklíčovat způsob, jakým je v tomto případě reprodukována genderová struktura společnosti. Teoretický rámec práce tvoří pojetí moci Michela Foucaulta, koncepty normalizace, disciplinace, vědění a pravda, a koncept genderového univerza Sandry Harding. Články jsou analyzovány pomocí kvalitativní metody, kritické diskurzivní analýzy (CDA), která je tradičně užívána k analýze mediálních výpovědí. Konkrétně využívá metodu „sedmi komponent“ Jamese Paula Geeho, dle kterého lze v každé mediální výpovědi identifikovat sedm aspektů reality – zvýznamňování, praktiky, identity, vztahy, sociální statky, spojení a legitimní vědění. Při jejich dekonstrukci získáme užitečné informace o kontextu výpovědi, které dále interpretujeme.

Abstract:

This Bachalor thesis deals with the topic of female criminality which is often neglected. It examines the media image of a woman who committed violent crime - murder, who was subsequently sentenced to life imprisonment. The thesis is based on 20 articles of the Lidove noviny newspaper. The goal of the thesis is to try to identify the dominant discourse of media statements, reveal disciplination and nornalization practices and identify the way how gendered structure of society is reproduced. The theoretical frame of thesis is made up of the concept of power, normalization, disciplination, knowledge and truth by Michel Foucault and the concept of gendered universe by Sandra Harding. The articles are analyzed using The qualitative method, critical discourse analysis (CDA),which is traditionally used for analyzing media statements. It uses “seven building tasks“ method constructed by James Paul Gee. According to him, any media statement contains seven aspects of reality - making meanings, practices, identities, relationships, social goods, connection and legitimate knowledge. By deconstructing these aspects we can obtain useful information about the context of testimony and further interpret them.
