Petrželka's "Štafeta" and Janáček's "Sinfonietta" between Sport and Ideology: the Reconstruction of Historical Readings

Abstract:

Diplomová práce je pokusem o rekonstrukci dobových čtení dvou z nejvýznamnějších děl české artificiální hudby dvacátých let dvacátého století, Štafety (1927), smyčcového kvartetu s vokálním partem Janáčkova žáka Viléma Petrželky, a Sinfonietty (1926) Leoše Janáčka. Činí tak na bázi dvou případových studií. Hlavní důraz je kladen na vztahy těchto skladeb, ale i jiných textů a diskurzivních praktik, formujících jejich dobovou recepci, k sportu jakožto typickému kulturnímu fenoménu dvacátých let. Práce se soustředí také na ideologické aspekty recepce těchto děl, a to zejména ve vztahu k oficiální prvorepublikové ideologii a (do značné míry) subversivní ideologii avantgardy.

Abstract:

The thesis is an attempt for reconstruction of historical readings of two of the most significant works of the Czech classical music of the 1920s. These works are: Štafeta (1927), a string quartet by Janáček’s pupil Vilém Petrželka, and Sinfonietta (1926) by Leoš Janáček. The body of the thesis consists of two case-studies, which emphasize the relationships between the both of these two works – but also other texts and discursive practicals, which formed their historical reception – and sport, typical cultural phenomenon of the 1920s. The thesis also focuses on ideological aspects of the reception of these compositions, especially in the relation to the official ideology of the First Czechoslovak Republic and to (to a large extent subversive) ideology of avant-garde.
