Natural burials - current state and further possibilities in Czech environment

Abstract:

This thesis discusses natural burials as a response to the crisis of Czech funeral rituals that are no longer satisfying for people in many different ways. These ceremonies today are therefore minimized or completely neglected, which results in an absence of this important transition ritual’s soothing effect. The focus of this work is, by means of a questionnaire survey, to find out people‘s views on the current state of conventional funerals and their interest in the opportunities that natural burials can provide. Not only do they solve the current negative environmental impact of burials, but they also support an open and responsible approach to death and promote the creation of creative and more meaningful ceremonies. It has been shown that the natural alternative burial is interesting to people and has potential for integration in the Czech environment. Part of this thesis is also an observation of the preparations of the first Czech natural cemetery Les vzpomínek (Wood of memories), which shall be the first step towards the aforementioned integration of natural burials as a full-valued part of funeral practices.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce pojednává o přírodním pohřebnictví jako o reakci na krizi českých pohřebních rituálů, které lidem přestali po mnoha stránkách vyhovovat. Tyto obřady jsou dnes proto minimalizovány nebo zcela opomíjeny, čímž zaniká působení tohoto důležitého přechodového rituálu. Cílem této práce je zjistit prostřednictvím dotazníkového výzkumu názory lidí na současný stav konvenčního pohřebnictví a jejich zájem o možnosti, které jim může poskytnout přírodní pohřebnictví. To nejenže řeší současný nepříznivý environmentální dopad pohřbů, ale zároveň formuje otevřený a zodpovědný přístup ke smrti a podporuje vytváření kreativních a zmysluplnějších obřadů. Ukázalo se, že alternativa přírodních pohřbů je pro lidi zajímavá a má v českém prostředí potenciál integrovat se. Součástí práce je i pohled na přípravu prvního českého přírodního hřbitova, Lesa vzpomínek, který představuje první krok ke zmíněné integraci přírodního pohřebnictví jako plnohodnotné součásti pohřební praxe.
