Stature Estimation according to the Skeleton: Comparison of Different Methods

Abstract:

V této diplomové práci je shrnut přehled dosavadních poznatků o stávajících metodách pro odhad výšky postavy jedince na základě skeletu, jejich principech, výhodách a nedostatcích. Na základě těchto teoretických znalostí byl navržen a realizován počítačový program Stature pro odhad výšky postavy jedince dle lidského skeletu. Program Stature zahrnuje 13 metod pro odhad výšky postavy (ve 23 variantách) a byl aplikován na kosterní ostatky z archeologického naleziště Brno – Vídeňská ulice, pocházející z 2. poloviny 11. století, a na data publikovaná I. Sierpovou a M. Hennebergem z Univerzity Adelaide roku 2016. Hlavním přínosem této diplomové práce jsou výsledky srovnání metod pro odhad výšky postavy jedince na zmíněných souborech, zahrnující potvrzení regrese k průměru v rámci regresních metod, potvrzení předpokladu o vhodnosti využití maximální délky femuru pro odhad výšky postavy jedince a určení metod, které nejlépe odhadují výšku postavy na daných souborech.

Abstract:

In this diploma thesis an overview of current knowledge of methods for estimating human stature based on a skeleton is summarized, with focus on principles, advantages and disadvantages of these methods. Based on this theoretical background software Stature for estimating human stature was designed and implemented. This software includes 13 methods for estimating human stature (in 23 variants). Software Stature was applied to skeletal remains from an archaeological site Brno – Vídeňská street from the second half of the 11th century and on data published by I. Sierp and M. Henneberg from the University of Adelaide in 2016. Methods for estimating stature were compared based on the results obtained by the software Stature. The main contribution of this thesis are the results of a comparison of methods for estimating human stature in mentioned data, including confirmation of regression to the mean in the regression methods, confirmation of the assumption about the appropriateness of using the maximum femoral length and determination of the methods that best estimate human stature for the given data.
