Everyman and Homulus: analysis of their genetic relation

Abstract:

Tématem práce je analýza vzájemného vztahu dvou středověkých moralit, anglického Everymana a latinského Homula. Na jejich příkladu se dokládá, že při zkoumání vztahu středověkých textů nevystačíme s pojmy překlad a adaptace v tom smyslu, jak je vnímá současná literárni teorie. Naopak se ukazuje, že překladatel středověkého textu se stává do velké míry spoluautorem překládaného díla a že výsledný produkt překladatelské práce není jen prostým převodem textu z původního jazyka do cílového, ale určitou formou jeho adaptace.

Abstract:

The aim of the thesis is to analyze the relation between two medieval morality plays, English Everyman and Latin Homulus. The analysis proves the notion of translation and adaptation, as understood by modern literary theory, to be insufficient while dealing with a medieval literary text. It is, on the other hand, clear that the medieval translator becomes co-author of the final text to a great extent, the product of translation process being not simply transposition of text into target language, but a form of its adaptation.
