Root system and biomass production in chosen catch crops

Abstract:

Pěstování meziplodin má v osevním sledu nezastupitelný význam při ochraně půdy před erozí, znečištěním podzemních vod dusičnany a regulaci koloběhu živin v meziporostním období. Z tohoto pohledu nabývá na významu velikost kořenového systému ve vztahu k produkci nadzemní biomasy a obsahu dusíku v půdě. Pokus s osmi odrůdami hořčice bílé (Sinapis alba L.) a pěti odrůdami svazenky vratičolisté (Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth.) byl veden na lokalitách Třešňovec a Troubsko v letech 2010–2012. Kořenový systém byl hodnocen dvěma metodami, nedestruktivní metodou měření velikosti kořenového systému (VKS) pomocí jeho elektrické kapacity a destruktivní metodou soil-core s následnou digitální analýzou obrazu. VKS byla měřena v průběhu vegetace ve třech růstových fázích. Kořenový systém na konci vegetační doby byl odebrán metodou soil-core a byly zjištěny parametry kořenového systému: RLD (Root Length Density), RSD (Root Surface Density), SRL (Specific Root Length), hmotnost kořenového systému. Byl stanoven výnos nadzemní biomasy a obsah iontů minerálního dusíku v půdě (N-NO3- a N-NH4+) po sklizni. Meziodrůdové rozdíly ve velikosti kořenového systému hořčice bílé byly pozorovány v roce 2011 a 2012. Odrůdy Semper a Sirte se vyznačovaly vyššími hodnotami VKS v kontrastu s odrůdou Medicus. Vliv odrůdy svazenky na hodnoty VKS nebyl prokázán. Byl nalezen vztah velikosti kořenového systému a jeho parametrů s výnosem nadzemní biomasy. Vyšší hodnoty RLD a RSD pozitivně ovlivnily výši výnosu hořčice zejména v suchém ročníku 2012 (r= 0,790 resp. r=0,888). Nicméně ve vláhově příznivých podmínkách a u odrůd svazenky nebyl tento pozitivní vztah zaznamenán. Porovnání výsledků simultánního hodnocení kořenového systému dvěma metodami potvrzuje, že obě techniky pracují na rozlišných principech a popis kořenového systému vybranými metodami nelze vždy považovat za rovnocenný. Obsah minerálních forem dusíku v půdě po sklizni nebyl spjat s výnosem a s velikostí kořenového systému hořčice, avšak vlastnosti kořenového aparátu svazenky souvisely s koncentrací minerálního dusíku v půdě ve všech sledovaných ročnících.

Abstract:

Catch crops growing plays a vital role in soil erosion, subterrainian water nitrate pollution prevention and regulation of nutrient cycle inter season. From this point of view, functionality and size of root system and its relation to shoot yield are of importance. An experiment with eight varieties of White mustard (Sinapis alba L.), and five varieties of Phacelia tanacetifolia (Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth.) was established in Třešňovec and Troubsko in 2010–2012. Two methods were used to assess the root system: a non-destructive method – root system size measurement (RSS) using its electrical capacity, and a destructive method soil-core followed by a digital image analysis. RSS was measured in three growth stages. The root system at the end of the growing season was collected by the soil-core method and its parametres were measured: RLD (Root Length Density), RSD (Root Surface Density), SRL (Specific Root Length), root system weight. Above-ground biomass yield was estimated along with the concentration of mineral nitrogen (N-NO3- a N-NH4+) in soil after harvest. Varietal differences in root system size of white mustard were observed in 2011 and 2012. The Semper and Sirte varieties were characterized by higher VKS values in contrast to the Medicus variety. The effect of the variety of Phacelia on VKS values has not been proved.The relationship between the root system size and its parameters with the aboveground biomass yield was found. Higher RLD and RSD values positively affected biomass yield of mustard, especially in the dry year 2012 (r = 0.790, resp. r = 0.888). However, this positive relation was not observed in water-favorable conditions and Phacelia varieties. Comparing the results of simultaneous evaluation of the root system by two methods confirms that both techniques work on different principles and the description of the root system by mentioned methods cannot always be considered equivalent. The mineral nitrogen content in the soil after harvest was not related to the yield and the root system size of mustard, but the root system characteristics of the Phacelia were related to the soil nitrogen content in all years studied.
