Motorway as a barrier to dispersal of the threatened dragonfly Sympetrum depressiusculum and its impact on the distribution of adults

Abstract:

Silniční sítě a s nimi spojená doprava jsou rychle se rozšiřujícím prvkem krajiny, který mnoha způsoby ovlivňuje ekosystémy a živočichy ve svém okolí. Většina studií se primárně soustředí na obratlovce a nelétavý hmyz. Létající druhy jsou zatím značně opomíjeny. Tato práce hodnotí bariérový efekt rychlostní silnice na disperzi kriticky ohrožené vážky rumělkové (Sympetrum depressiusculum) poblíž města Příbor na základě analýzy aktuálních znalostí a vlastního terénního výzkumu uskutečněného v létě roku 2016. Cílem výzkumu bylo zhodnotit, jaký má silnice vliv na početnost dospělců po obou stranách vozovky a zda tedy působí jako bariéra pro jejich pohyb terestrickým prostředím. Pomocí zobecněných aditivních modelů byl hodnocen vliv silnice na početnost dospělců na vytipovaných stanovištích s různým typem habitatů. Byl zjištěn negativní vliv silnice na početnost dospělců, pravděpodobně z důvodu mortality při jejím překonávání. Jelikož studovaná populace je velmi izolovaná a svým vývojem odkázaná pouze na jediný plůdkový rybník se specifickým vodním režimem, negativní vliv silnice na tento druh je zřejmě o to významnější. Vliv dopravy na létající hmyz se nedá hodnotit v globálním měřítku, jelikož kaţdý druh má své specifické potřeby a vlastnosti, a charakteristiky silnic a provozu jsou na jednotlivých místech různé. Při plánování výstavby nových silnic by měly být tyto faktory zváženy, a výstavba by měla být přizpůsobena tak, aby její dopad na okolní krajinu byl co nejmenší. Na již existujících silnicích v blízkosti biotopů zájmových druhů by pouhé omezení rychlosti mohlo výrazně snížit počet kolizí letících jedinců s vozidly.

Abstract:

The road network and associated transport are rapidly expanding landscape elements which affect the surrounding ecosystem and associated organisms in multiple ways. However, most of the studies have primarily focused on the vertebrates and flightless insects, while the flying species have been neglected. This work evaluates the barrier effect of the motorway on the dispersal and distribution of the critically endangered dragonfly Sympetrum depressiusculum near Příbor. It is based on the analysis of current knowledge and field research conducted in the summer 2016. We aimed to assess the impact of the motorway on the abundance of individuals on the both sides of the road, and infer whether it acts as a barrier for their movement through the terrestrial landscape. The effect of the motorway on the abundance of adults at selected habitat patches with the various types of vegetation was evaluated using the generalized additive models. We found that the motorway had a negative impact on the abundance of adults, presumably due to the roadkills during the crossing attempts. As the studied population is very isolated and its development is restricted to the small breeding pond with the specific water regime; the negative effect of the motorway on this species is thus even more significant. The impact of transport on flying insects cannot be globally evaluated since each species has its own specific requirements and features, as well as the character of roads and transport at differs according to location. These factors should be taken into account during the road construction planning, and the construction itself should be adjusted to minimize the negative impact on wildlife in its surroundings. Speed reduction on already existing roads near habitats of target species could significantly decrease the number of collisions of flying individuals with vehicles.
