Translation and analysis of Francesco Geminiani's violin treatise

Abstract:

Práce obsahuje český překlad houslového traktátu Francesca Geminianiho, který byl vydán tiskem roku 1751 v Londýně pod názvem The Art of Playing on the Violin (česky Umění hry na housle). Ještě téhož roku byl u stejného vydavatele vytištěn znovu, 1752 vychází v Paříži, 1782 ve Vídni. Učebnice Francesca Geminianiho patří k základním příručkám pedagogiky barokních houslí. Dělí se na textovou a notovou část. Notová část obsahuje 24 příkladů (Example, Essempio) a 12 kompozic (Compositione). Kompozice a některé příklady jsou opatřeny doprovodem bassa continua. Textová část je vlastně komentářem k příkladům. K některým otázkám houslové hry podává Geminiani pouze povšechné informace a učebnice neobsahuje vyobrazení držení houslí či smyčce, proto není určena samoukům, ale vyžaduje přítomnost učitele. Ve svém pedagogickém výkladu sleduje Geminiani výdobytky moderní italské houslové techniky. Držení houslí je dosti tradiční, předepisuje opřít housle proti hrudi pod klíční kost a přidržovat je levou rukou. Při tomto držení je problematická zvláště výměna poloh, zde však Geminiani podává poměrně přesný návod. O držení smyčce nenajdeme v traktátu přesné informace, avšak zavrhováním barokního pravidla "down-bow" (pravidlo smyku od žabky na každé první době taktu) Geminiani dokazuje modernost svého pojetí. Notové příklady provázené textovými vysvětlivkami postihují všechny oblasti houslové techniky: výměny poloh, procvičování stupnic, dvojhmatů, chromatiku, různé smyky a výrazové otázky (melodické ozdoby, messa di voce, vibráto). V technice levé ruky jde Geminiani až do sedmé polohy, používá dvojhmaty v rozsahu sekundy až oktávy. Pro techniku pravé ruky je zvlášť důležitý Příklad XX, kde podává způsoby přednesu různých notových hodnot v pomalém a rychlém tempu a dále Příklad XXI, přinášející různé způsoby hraní arpeggia.

Abstract:

The thesis contains Czech translation of Francesco Geminiani's violin tratise, which was published in London in 1751, titled The Art of Playing on the Violin. It was published again the same year by the same publisher, in 1752 it was published in Paris, 1782 in Vienna. Francesco Geminiani´s Textbook belongs to an essential guides of the baroque violin pedagogy. It is devided in two parts: the text and the sheet music examples. The music score section provides 24 Examples (Example, Essempio) and 12 compositions (Compositione). The Compositions and some examples are provided by accompaniment of basso continuo. The text passages are basically comments to the examples. To some questions of playing on the violin Geminiani gives only broad informations and the textbook does not include illustration of holding the violin or a bow, therefore it is not intended for the self - learners, but requires presence of a teacher. In his educational interpretation Geminiani follows modern achievements of Italian violin technique. The holding of the violin is quite a traditional, he precribes to lean the violin against the chest under the collarbone and hold the instrument by the left hand. In this holding is especially problematic to exchange the positions, but there Geminiani gives a fairly accurate guide. In the Treatise there are no accurate informations of holding the bow, nevertheless by a rejection of a baroque rule of "down-bow" (the rule of down bow on every first beat in the bar) Geminiani proves his conception of modernity. Musical examples accompanied by explanatory notes affect all areas of the violin technique: shifting, scales practising, double stops, chromatic, various bowings and th! e questions of expression (ornaments, messa di voce, vibrato).! In the technique of the left hand Geminiani goes up to 7th position, he uses double stops in the range of the second up to the octave. For the right technique of the right hand is particularly important Example XX, where Geminiani describes ways how to perform various values of the notes in slow and quick tempo and Example XXI, bringing a variety of ways to play arpeggios.
