Influence of winds on tree habitus up of forest line in the Desenská hornatina mountain ridge in the Jeseníky Mts., Czechia

Abstract:

Tato práce se věnuje vlivu větru na tvar stromů nad horní hranicí lesa na rozsoše Mravenečníku v Hrubém Jeseníku. Byla zde ověřována hypotéza, dle níž je orientace vlajkových korun stromů ovlivněna směry větrů při obtékání vrcholů hor. Cílem bylo zjistit jaký je směr vlajkových korun a jak závisí na orientaci svahů a nadmořské výšce. Dalším cílem bylo srovnání s ostatními hřbety Jeseníků. Při výzkumu na tomto území byla získána data, která vypovídala o úhlu poškození stromů. Následnými statistickými analýzami bylo zjištěno, že záznamy o poškození poukazují na ataky převážně od jihu až jihozápadu, což odporuje vžité představě převažujícího západního proudění na našem území. Naopak to podporuje fakt, že silnější, a tedy destruktivnější větry zde mají převládající směr od jihu až jihozápadu. Významněji se také projevil vliv větrů ze severu a západu. Průkaznost těchto zjištění je ale do jisté míry snížena, když si uvědomíme, že bylo analyzováno poškození jen u 59 % záznamů. U zbývajících 41 % nebylo možno jakékoliv poškození určit. Tento výsledek byl očekávaný a poukazuje na nižší vliv větru na tomto, ve srovnání s okolními, nižším hřebenu.

Abstract:

This thesis studies the influence of winds on tree habitus up of forest line in Mravenečník Area in the Jeseníky Mountains. According to the hypothesis, orientation of flag trees‘ crowns is influenced by winds when they flow around the tops of the hills. The aim was to ascertain how the direction of the flag trees is dependent on the aspect of slopes and elevation and also to compare the influence here with those on other ridges of Jeseníky Mountains. The data about damage of the trees were collected in research done in the studied area. In statistical analysis afterward, it was discovered that the trees were damaged predominantly from southern and south-western winds, which contradicts generally accepted proclamation about prevailing western winds in the Czech Republic. On the contrary, it supports the fact that stronger and so more damaging winds here are those from south and south-west. Other significant winds were observed from north and west. Evidential force of these conclusions is however decreased to some extent when we realise that the analysis was run only on 59 % of all records, because the remainig 41 % of the records did not have any data about damage by the wind as there was none assessed. This result was anticipated and it refers to lower influence of the winds in this, compared to the others, lower mountain ridge.
