The impact of the scope and intensity of activity of Facebook on young adults‘ social relationships

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá souvislostmi mezi způsobem a mírou používání sociální sítě Facebook a vybranými aspekty sociálních vztahů mladých dospělých. Konkrétně jsou prozkoumány vzájemné vztahy s osamělostí respondentů, kvalitou jejich přátelských vztahů a frekvencí jejich setkání formou tváří v tvář. Je také zjišťován vliv jednotlivých proměnných nad rámec osobnostních rysů Big Five. Do empirického výzkumu se zapojilo 1007 osob ve věku 20 až 35 let. Korelační analýzou jsme prokázali, že čas strávený aktivním používáním Facebooku slabě pozitivně koreluje s časem stráveným „offline“ setkáními i nad rámec vlivu pohlaví, věku a osobnostních charakteristik. Intenzita používání Facebooku také slabě pozitivně souvisí s kvalitou přátelského vztahu k nejbližšímu příteli, nikoliv však nad rámec výše zmíněných intervenujících proměnných. Vztah množství času stráveného na této sociální síti s osamělostí respondentů se nepotvrdil. Moderační vliv míry sebeodhalení zúčastněných osob na Facebooku také nebyl prokázán. Bylo popsáno několik vztahů mezi používáním jednotlivých funkcí Facebooku a časem stráveným „offline“ setkáními, kvalitou přátelských vztahů i osamělostí. Celkově lze konstatovat, že škodlivý vliv intenzivního používání Facebooku na tyto aspekty sociálních vztahů nebyl zjištěn.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the relationship between the way and intensity of the usage of the social network Facebook and selected aspects of social relationships of young adults. In particular, associations with loneliness of respondents, their friendship quality, and frequency of their face-to-face meetings have been explored. The effect of individual variables beyond the Big Five personality traits has been investigated as well. 1007 respondents between 20 and 35 years of age took part in the empirical research. Correlation analysis has shown that the time spent actively using Facebook has a weak positive correlation with the time spent at „offline“ meetings even when controlling for the effect of sex, age, and personality traits. Intensity of Facebook usage also weakly positively correlates with the quality of friendship with the closest friend but not beyond the effect of the abovementioned intervening variables. Relationship between the amount of time spent at this social network with the loneliness of respondents has not been confirmed. Moderation effect of the extent of self-disclosure of research participants on Facebook has not been confirmed either. Several relationships have been described between the usage of specific Facebook functions and the amount of time spent at „offline“ meetings, friendship quality, and loneliness. To summarize, no harmful effect of intensive Facebook usage on the above aspects of socials relationships has been found in this study.
