Partial Order Reduction in Parallel Model Checking

Abstract:

Hlavním zaměřením této práce je technika redukce částečným uspořádáním pro paralelní LTL model checking. Přínos techniky spočívá v její paralelní implementaci, poskytující skutečně dynamickou heuristiku se sekvenční složitostí v O(n). Naproti tomu, tradiční techniku založenou na DFS nelze používat s paralelními algoritmy a existující heuristiky vhodné pro paralelní prostředí vyžadují super-lineární čas nebo jsou příliš striktní, ve srovnání s sekvenčními implementacemi. Tuto techniku uvažujeme v širokém kontextu technologie a algoritmů pro paralelní, vysokovýkonný enumerativní LTL model checking, a to jak z hlediska teoretického tak i technického. K dispozici je zdrojový kód popsaného systému, zahrnujícího kompletní model checker vhodný pro obecné použití. Techniku redukce částečným uspořádáním doplňuje vylepšený on-the-fly algoritmus pro paralelní detekci cyklů, dále posouvající hranice dostupné technologie. Tento algoritmus lze navíc výborně kombinovat s navrhovanou technikou redukce.

Abstract:

The main focus of this thesis is a partial order reduction technique for parallel LTL model checking. The novelty of our technique lies in its parallel implementation, and in providing truly dynamic heuristic with serial time complexity in O(n). In contrast, the traditional DFS-based techniques cannot be used with parallel algorithms. Moreover, the existing heuristics amenable to parallel execution either require super-linear time or otherwise are too strict compared to sequential implementations. Additionally, we frame the mentioned technique in a broad overview of technology and algorithms for high-performance parallel enumerative LTL model checking. We give both theoretical background and technical details, and provide source code of the system described (comprising a complete model checker suitable for general use). To augment the partial order reduction technique, an improved on-the-fly algorithm for parallel cycle detection is given, again furthering the state of the art. Importantly, the improved algorithm fits extremely well with the proposed reduction technique.
