Weapons and armour in the era of Wenceslaus IV.

Abstract:

Tématem dizertační práce je zobrazování zbraní a zbroje v nástěnné, knižní a deskové malbě spojené s dobou vlády Václava IV. a jádrem zemí Koruny české. Těžištěm práce jsou popisy a interpretace jednotlivých zobrazení bezprostřední pasivní i aktivní ochrany bojovníka. Vhodné nástěnné malby byly identifikovány ve více než čtyřiceti objektech. Tyto jsou doplněny o příklady militarií v dalších typech malby, kterým se podrobně věnoval předchozí výzkum. Náplní dizertační práce není pouze hledání odpovědí na otázku, jak jsou tyto předměty zobrazovány, ale zároveň proč jsou tak zobrazovány a jakou mají ve vyobrazeních funkci. Studie pracuje s pojmem imaginace, uvažuje o předmětech jako o symbolech a hledá jejich vztah k historické realitě či fikci. Práce tak nesouvisí pouze s dějinami předmětů, ale je zároveň sondou do myšlení středověkého člověka skrze umění. Uvažuje o malbě jako o zprostředkovateli světa předmětů a myšlenek středověké společnosti a přispívá tak do širší uměleckohistorické diskuse.

Abstract:

The topic of the dissertation is portraying weapons and armour in mural paintings, illuminated manuscripts and panel paintings related to the reign of Wenceslaus IV of Bohemia and the core of the Lands of the Bohemian Crown. The thesis focuses mainly on descriptions and interpretations of individual portrayals of immediate passive and active protection of the combatant. Suitable mural paintings were identified in more than forty buildings. These are supplemented with examples of militaria in other types of paintings, which were paid close attention to in the previous research. The content of the thesis is not only seeking answers to the question of how these objects are portrayed, but also why they are portrayed in this way and what their function in the portrayals is. The study employs the concept of imagination, considers objects as symbols and examines their relation to historical reality or fiction. The thesis thus does not deal exclusively with the history of objects, but is also a probe into the thinking of the medieval man through art. It entertains painting as a mediator between the world of objects and the world of medieval thought, contributing to the wider art historical discussion.
