Utilization of IoT in stabilizing electricity grid based on low carbon energy resources

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá využitím IoT zařízení v chytrých elektrických sítích k řešení problémů nízkouhlíkových zdrojů energie. Cílem je posoudit, jestli IoT může k řešení těchto problémů přispět, a pokud ano, odhadnout, jak významný tento potenciální přínos může být. V první části práce jsou popsány nízkouhlíkové zdroje energie a identifikovány jejich slabiny. Nízkouhlíkové zdroje s dobře regulovatelným výkonem jsou špatně škálovatelné, a výkon všech tří škálovatelných je špatně regulovatelný. Výkon dvou ze tří dobře škálovatelných zdrojů je navíc silně variabilní. Výsledný energetický mix z těchto zdrojů tedy bude variabilní a špatně regulovatelný. Jsou představena omezení tradičního řešení těchto problémů v podobě úložišť energie, zejména jejich omezená škálovatelnost a vysoká cena. V druhé části práce jsou zkoumány možnosti využití IoT pro řešení těchto problémů. Je stanoveno, že IoT zařízení jsou klíčovými komponenty chytré sítě, a že mezi vlastnosti chytrých sítí patří podpora distribuovaných zdrojů energie a řízení poptávky po energii, které zvyšuje elasticitu poptávky. Je vysvětleno, proč řízení chytrých sítí musí být distribuované a automatizované, a jsou popsány a porovnány vybrané algoritmy pro řízení chytré sítě. Na základě toho je stanoveno, že IoT může pomáhat řešit problémy nízkouhlíkových zdrojů energie. Ve třetí části práce je posuzováno, jak významný je potenciální přínos zvýšení elasticity poptávky po elektrické energii na řešení těchto problémů. Je identifikováno, jaké a jak velké části poptávky lze takto posouvat a o jak dlouhý časový úsek. Na základě toho je učiněn pokus o kvantifikaci tohoto přínosu v podobě snížení nároků na úložiště energie. Tyto potenciální úspory jsou porovnány s náklady na chytré sítě specifickými pro zvyšování elasticity poptávky. Toto srovnání vychází příznivě, z čehož je vyvozen závěr, že kombinace řízení poptávky po energii s úložišti energie by mohlo být výhodnější než spoléhání na samotná úložiště.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with utilization of IoT devices in Smart electric grids. The aim is to determine whether IoT can help solve problems of low carbon energy sources, and if it can, provide an estimate of how significant this contribution could be. In the first part of this thesis is a description of low carbon energy sources, in which their weaknesses are identified. These weaknesses are that low carbon energy sources with easily controllable power output are poorly scalable, and those that are easily scalable have uncontrollable or poorly controllable power output. In addition to that, two of the three scalable energy sources have strongly variable power output. Energy storage methods are introduced as an established solution to these problems, along with their limitations, notably their limited scalability and high cost. The second part of this thesis explores utilization of IoT in solving these problems. It is determined that IoT devices are key components of Smart Grids, and that among the properties of Smart grids are support of distributed energy sources, and demand response, which increases the elasticity of demand for electricity. An explanation is given for why control of Smart Grids cannot be centralized and must be done automatically in a distributed manner. Several algorithms for this distributed control are described and compared to each other. It is determined on the basis of this that IoT can indeed help solve the problems identified in part one. The third part of this thesis is trying to determine, how big the potential contribution of demand response to solving these problems could be. Demand for electricity is broken down into sectors and types of devices, to determine which parts of demand could be moved, and by how much. An attempt is made based on this to quantify the potential contribution of demand response in the form of reduced need for energy storage. These potential savings are compared to costs associated with demand response. Since the result of this comparison is positive, a conclusion is reached that a combination of demand response with energy storage could be a more efficient solution that relying on energy storage alone.
