Plato´s political philosophy

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je interpretovat problém Platónovy politické filosofie v širším smyslu. Hlavním zdrojem pro tuto interpretaci je Platónův dialog Ústava, z něhož lze pochopit, že problém politické filosofie je u Platóna úzce spojen s otázkou výchovy. Proto se tato práce zabývá také problémy poesie a rétoriky, neboť tato dvě odvětví hrála klíčkovou roli v procesu výchovy ve starověkých Athénách. Práce se skládá v podstatě ze dvou částí: 1) negativní, v níž se zkoumá Platónův kritický postoj k poesii, rétorice a politice; 2) positivní, ve které jsou popsány Platónovy filosofické alternativy ve všech těchto odvětvích. Mezi těmito dvěma částmi se nachází tzv. omfalos. v němž je zkoumán ontologický a epistemologický rámec Platónovy filosofie. Ukazuje se, že v jádru Platónovy filosofie leží nepodmíněná entita, jež přesahuje rámec tohoto světa i světa idejí a která nemůže být uchopena prostřednictvím rozumu, ale pouze v mystickém vytržení, které radikálně proměňuje člověka, jenž jej prodělá. I když toto téma nepatří do politické filosofie, poskytuje nám nepostradatelný rámec, bez něhož nelze Platónově kritice ani jeho vlastním filosofickým alternativám správně porozumět.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to interpret the problem of Plato´s political philosophy in a broader sense. The main source is then Plato´s well-known dialogue ? the Republic. It is showed that this problem is closely connected with the question of education. That is why this thesis deals also with the problems of poetry and rhetoric, for these were the major educative authorities in the city of Athens. The thesis consists basically of two parts - a negative one in which Plato´s critical attitude to poetry, rhetoric, and politics is examined, and a positive one in which Plato´s philosophical alternatives in all these fields are described. Amid these two parts lies a so-called omphalos (literally: a navel) in which the core of Plato´s philosophy - the ontological and epistemological groundwork - is explored. It turns out that in the heart of Plato´s lies an unhypothetical entity that exists either beyond this world and beyond the realm of ideas and which cannot be grasped by the means of intellect. It can be seen only in a mystical rapture which has a radically transformative effect on the one who sees it. Although this topic does not belong to the political philosophy, it supplies us with an indispensable groundwork and it is on the basis of this groundwork only that Plato´s critique and his philosophical alternatives can be correctly understood.
