Shakespeare for Teenage Girls: Contemporary Feminist Re-Reading of Three Shakespeare Plays

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem diplomové práce je analýza tří adaptací Shakespearových her Hamlet (1623), Kupec benátský (1623) a Macbeth (1623). Jedná se o současné adaptace Shakespeara pro mládež Dating Hamlet (2002) od Lisy Fiedler, The Turquoise Ring (2005) od Grace Tiffany a Lady Macbeth's Daughter (2009) od Lisy Klein. Práce se snaží dokázat, že tyto tři adaptace se prolínají s teorií adaptace a feministickou teorií a kritikou, a tak zdůrazňují vliv současných spoločensko-politických otázek na adaptace Shakespeara pro dospívající ženské čtenáře. Analýzy ukazují, že Shakespearovy hry jsou přizpůsobeny vkusu současných čtenářů, zejména mladých dospívajících dívek, které jsou cílovou skupinou těchto románů. Analýza dále dokazuje, že ženské hlavní hrdinky ze zdrojových textů jsou upraveny tak, aby nesly znaky feministek třetí vlny feminismu, zaujaly jejich myšlenky a postoje. Změny, které se objevují v adaptacích Shakespearových her, tedy zobrazují postoj feministických spisovatelek, kritiček a akademiků k Shakespearovi. Adaptace navíc zahrnují i didaktické prvky, a tak vzdělávají cílové publikum. Závěr předkládané práce tedy ukazuje, že adaptace Shakespearových her pro mladé dívky jsou do značné míry ovlivňovány feminismem a současnými spoločensko-politickými otázkami.

Abstract:

The main aim of the thesis is to analyse three contemporary young adult appropriations of Shakespeare’s plays Hamlet (1623), The Merchant of Venice (1623) and Macbeth (1623) – Dating Hamlet (2002) by Lisa Fiedler, The Turquoise Ring (2005) by Grace Tiffany and Lady Macbeth’s Daughter by Lisa Klein (2009). The thesis tries to prove that the three young adult appropriations of Shakespeare’s plays are intertwined with the theory of adaptation and the feminist theory and criticism, thus emphasising the influence of contemporary socio-political issues on the adaptations and appropriations of Shakespeare for young adult female readers. The analyses demonstrate that Shakespeare’s plays are appropriated to conform to the tastes of the contemporary readers, especially young teenage girls who are a target audience of these novels. They also prove that the female protagonists from the source texts are modified to bear the features of the third wave feminists, their thoughts and attitudes. The modifications that occur in the adaptations of Shakespeare’s plays, therefore, demonstrate the attitude of feminist writers, critics and scholars towards Shakespeare. Moreover, the appropriations even encompass didactic elements, and thus educate the target audience. The conclusion of the present thesis is, therefore, that the appropriations of Shakespeare’s plays for teenage girls are influenced by feminism and contemporary socio-political issues to a large extent.
