Master's thesis

The subject of the diploma thesis is focused on the activity of "Stráž lidu" in Olomouc between 1988 and 1992 in relation to the progression of a political and social system for gradual coming up of the liberalization. The subject will also be embedded in a wider context, not only historical but also media area. Part of the thesis will be therefore mapping of the state of the local/regional journalism in the territory of today's Olomouc region.

Abstract:

Předmětem magisterské diplomové práce je popis principů fungování redakce olomoucké Stráže lidu v období 1988 až 1992, a to ve vztahu k dějinným událostem, které se v Československu v tomto přelomovém období odehrávaly a souvisely se všemi oblastmi veřejného života. Stráž lidu patřila k významným propagandistickým médiím Komunistické strany Československa. Právě úzká provázanost okresních novin s politickou sférou se stala Stráži lidu na počátku 90. let osudnou. Jakým problémům čelila redakce před sametovou revolucí, kdo stál za většinou rozhodovacích procesů a jak se listopadové události roku 1989 podepsaly na dalším směřování periodika? Tyto a další původně neveřejné informace poodhaluje čtenářům tento dokument. Zároveň nabízí detailní historický exkurz, který slouží k jednodušší orientaci v dané problematice. Při svém výkladu jevů čerpá nejen z odborné literatury, ale zejména z archivních záznamů stranických orgánů, dochovaných výtisků Stráže lidu a vzácných vzpomínek pamětníků, již byli mnoha událostem v Olomouci osobně přítomni.

Abstract:

The main concept of this master's thesis is to describe principles of functioning of the editorial office "Stráž lidu" in Olomouc between 1988 and 1992 in relation to historical events that took place in Czechoslovakia during this breakthrough period and related to all areas of public sector. "Stráž lidu" was one of the most significant propaganda media of the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. But the close link between the district newspaper and the political are became fatal to "Stráž lidu" in the early 1990s. What problems did the editors face before the Velvet Revolution, who was behind the most of the decision-making processes and how did the November events of the year 1989 influenced the direction of the periodical? These and other originally non-public information reveals this document to readers. It also offers detailed historical excursion, which has a purpose to be able to easily oriented in this topics. When interpreting the phenomena, it draws not only from specialized literature, but especially from archival records of parties, preserved publications of "Stráž lidu" and the rare memories of witnesses who were personally present at many events in Olomouc that time.
