Occupational stress of perioperative nurses

Abstract:

Diplomová práce si klade za cíl zmapovat stresové faktory práce z pohledu sester na operačním sále. Zaměřuje se na náročnost profese, na specifika stresového zatížení a hodnotí riziko vzniku syndromu vyhoření v souvislosti s mírou rizika na jiných odděleních. Snaží se podat ucelený pohled na profesi perioperační sestry s ohledem na její náročná specifika a jejich dopad na sálové sestry. Práce byla zpracována pomocí kvalitativního šetření, jež probíhalo formou polostrukturovaných rozhovorů a dotazníku Maslachové. Rozhovory byly realizovány s deseti perioperačními sestrami pracujících na centrálních operačních sálech, na dotazníky odpovídaly sestry z operačních sálů, z oddělení následné péče a oddělení gynekologického, dětského, interního, chirurgického a anesteziologicko-resuscitačního. Z šetření vyplynulo, že mezi hlavní specifika stresové zátěže sálových sester patří stres z odborné náročnosti, stres u akutních operací, nedodržování přestávek, velká zodpovědnost a zátěž z problematických mezilidských vztahů na pracovišti. Bylo zjištěno, že největší mírou stresového zatížení trpí sestry s dobou praxe mezi 20 - 25 lety. Závěry dále poukazují na fakt, že sestry na operačním sále nejsou ohroženy syndromem vyhoření více než sestry na jiných vybraných odděleních. Práce by měla zvýšit povědomí a informovanost sester o zvláštnostech a specifické náročnosti profese perioperační sestry.

Abstract:

The goal of the thesis is to map stress factors of the job from the view of nurses at an operating room. It focuses on requirements of the profession, specifics of stress load and evaluates the risk of inception of burnout syndrome in context of risk rates at other wards. It strives to deliver thorough insight into the profession with focus on its demanding specifics and its impact on perioperative nurses. This thesis was conducted by qualitative research consisting of semi-structured interviews and Maslach Burnout Inventory. Ten interviews with perioperative nurses who work at central operating rooms were realised, The questionnaires were responded by nurses who work at operating rooms, departments of aftercare, internal medicine, gynaecology, pediatry, surgery, anaesthesiology-resuscitation and intensive care. From survey emerged that the major stressors of perioperative nurses are stress of expertise demands, acute surgeries, breaks non-compliance, high responsibility and problematic relationships with colleagues. It has been found that nurses who have 20-25 years' experience suffer from increased rates of stress. Conclusions furthermore indicate perioperative nurses are not struck by burnout syndrome more often than nurses working at other selected wards. The aim of the thesis is also to heighten awareness of nurses about peculiarities and specific demands of the profession of perioperative nurse.
