The New Media and Hybridization of Postmodern Film

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce s názvem "Nová média a hybridizace postmoderního filmu" si klade za cíl zodpovědět otázku, jakým způsobem se nová média podílí na hybridním charakteru postmoderní kinematografie. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou část a analýzu tří vybraných snímků. První část se zabývá vymezením obecných charakteristik postmoderní kultury, stručně shrnuje základní vývojová stádia kinematografie a věnuje se také technologiím, které se významným způsobem podílí na podobě filmové produkce. Samostatná kapitola je věnována rozboru základních charakteristik postmoderního filmu. Primární důraz je přitom kladen na hybridní charakter digitální kinematografie, kombinující prvky hraného filmu a počítačové animace, a jeho vliv na filmovou narativitu a identitu filmu jako takového. Cílem praktické části je potom demonstrovat zjištěné poznatky na příkladech filmů Lola běží o život, Kill Bill a Matrix. Všechny tyto snímky jsou v rámci postmoderní filmové tvorby určitým způsobem signifikantní a mohou posloužit jako vhodné příklady pro ilustraci základních charakteristik postmoderní kinematografie. Z teoretické i praktické části práce vyplynulo, že zapojení digitální technologie v rámci filmové produkce otevřelo nové možnosti pro to, jak dosáhnout kombinování, kopírování a pastiše. Nástup digitální kinematografie tak výrazně posílil obecné tendence směřující k estetice surface play a k hybridizaci postmoderního filmu.

Abstract:

This thesis on "The New Media and Hybridization of Postmodern Film" aims to answer the question, by what means the new media influence the hybrid character of postmodern filmmaking. The work consists of a theoretical and an analytical part. Common characteristics of posmodern culture, as well as the main periods of cinematography development and the technologies that sigificantly influence film production nowadays, are defined in the first section. Basic characteristics of postmodern film are shown in a special chapter. In the whole thesis the stress is put especially on the hybrid character of digital filmmaking, that combines units of actors film and computer animation, and its influence on film narrativity and film identity itself. The theoretical knowledge is demonstrated on the following film examples: Lola run, Kill Bill and Matrix. All these films play a significant role in the period of postmodernism, therefore they were chosen to demonstrate the principles of postmodern filmmaking. In conclusion, the involvement of digital technologies into film production led to new opportunities for combining, copying and pastiche. The entrée of digital filmmaking evidently supported common tendency leading to aesthetics of surface play and hybridization of postmodern film.
