Nowcasting of economic output

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se věnuje tématu nowcastingu hrubého domácího produktu neboli odhadování aktuálního stavu ekonomiky za pomocí dat měřených ve více frekvencích. Cílem diplomové práce je popsat a aplikovat metody pro předpovídání aktuálního stavu ekonomiky z pohledu hospodářského cyklu (tzv. nowcasting), a následně porovnat kvalitu takto získaných predikcí vývoje výstupu pomocí moderních metod nowcastingu se zástupcem tradičních (tj. v literatuře již delší dobu zavedených) přístupů. Po analýze literatury byla zvolena jako zástupce tradičních přístupů metoda mixed data sampling (MIDAS), pro modernější přístupy to poté byla metoda mixed-frequency Bayesian vector autoregression (MF BVAR). Obě metody následně byly testovány v praktickém cvičení, které probíhalo jako rekurzivní nowcasting s posuvným okénkem mezi lety 2016 a 2023 pro HDP v České republice. Z výsledků vyplývá lepší predikční přesnost MF BVAR v období před pandemií Covidu-19. Naopak v období po nástupu pandemie, stejně jako v součtu obou období, vykazovala lepší přesnost metoda MIDAS.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with the topic of nowcasting the gross domestic product or estimating the current state of the economy using mixed-frequency data. The aim of the diploma thesis is to describe and apply methods for forecasting the current state of the economy from the point of view of the business cycle (so-called nowcasting), and subsequently to compare the quality of the obtained predictions of the development of output using modern nowcasting methods with a representative of traditional (i.e. long-established in the literature) approaches . After analyzing the literature, the mixed data sampling (MIDAS) method was chosen as a representative of traditional approaches, while for more modern approaches it was the mixed-frequency Bayesian vector autoregression (MF BVAR) method. Both methods were subsequently tested in a practical exercise that took place as recursive nowcasting with a sliding window between 2016 and 2023 for GDP in the Czech Republic. The results show better prediction accuracy of MF BVAR in the period before the Covid-19 pandemic. On the contrary, in the period after the onset of the pandemic, as well as in the sum of both periods, the MIDAS method showed better accuracy.
