Pronunciation comparison of students of Chinese language from selected countries

Abstract:

These days Chinese is a language taught all over the world. More and more universities are opening new programmes focused on China and Chinese language. There are also more language agencies, which are opening courses of Chinese. The reason is not only the interest in Chinese culture, but also increasing interest of the employers in employees with knowledge of this language, caused by cooperation of many companies with China. At the same time it is also one of the hardest languages to learn, mainly because hard pronunciation, caused by tones and Chinese characters. Students all around the world are learning pronunciation with different techniques and their pronunciation is also influeced by their mother tongue and other languages which they can speak. Another influence on student´s pronunciation is the teacher, who can and does not have to be a native Chinese, can come from different parts of China, so his pronunciation can be different because of his dialect. The goal of this work was to compare the pronunciation of the students of Chinese from selected countries (Russia and Korean Republic) and find out if there were any differences and if yes, then which differences there were. Methodology of this work was choosing of the most suitable words and sentences in Chinese (most common, most difficult, special features) with the help of literature about Chinese pronunciation and making of a document from this. The text was made the way, that it contains all the combinations of tones and as many features as possible, which were compared. Also a short questionnaire was made, with which it was found out which languages do the respondents speak and how are they learning Chinese pronunciation. After that the questionnaires were sent and the recordings were collected from the foreign students during the stay in China. Before the start of the examining and comparing of the recordings, the IPA transcription was studied, which was used during the examination. After collecting of the recordings, connections with the answers from the questionnaires were compared and examined and the native Chinese helped with the examination of the recordings. Eventual differences in pronunciaton and their possible reasons were examined during the comparision. Mistakes were shown in spectrograms and compared with the spectrograms of a native Chinese speaker. After that, the results were made into this work.

Abstract:

Čínština je v dnešnej dobe jazykom vyučovaným po celom svete. Čím ďalej tým viac univerzít otvára nové odbory zamerané na Čínu a čínštinu. Zároveň môžeme vidieť viac jazykových agentúr, ktoré otvárajú kurzy čínštiny. Dôvodom je nielen záujem o čínsku kultúru, ale aj čím ďalej tým väčší záujem zamestnávateľov o zamestnancov so znalosťou tohoto jazyka, zapríčinený spoluprácou mnohých firiem z Čínou. Zároveň je aj jedným z najťažších jazykov na naučenie a to najmä vďaka náročnej výslovnosti, zapríčinenej tónmi a čínskym znakovým písmom. Študenti po celom svete sa učia výslovnosť rôznymi postupmi a ich výslovnosť je rovnako ovplyvnená aj ich materinským jazykom a ostatnými jazykmi, ktoré ovládajú. Na výslovnosť študentov ďalej vplýva aj učiteľ, ktorý môže aj nemusí byť rodený Číňan, môže pochádzať z rôznych oblastí v Číne, čiže jeho výslovnosť môže v niektorých prípadoch byť poznačená dialektom. Cieľom tejto práce bolo porovnať výslovnosť študentov čínštiny z vybraných krajín (Rusko a Kórejská republika) a zistiť, či sú medzi nimi nejaké odlišnosti a ak áno, tak aké. Metódou tejto práce bolo vybratie najvhodnejších slov a viet v čínštine (najbežnejšie, najťažšie, zvláštne javy) pomocou literatúry o čínskej výslovnosti a spracovanie týchto prvkov do prehľadného dokumentu. Text bol spracovaný tak, aby obsahoval všetky kombinácie tónov a čo najviac javov, ktoré boli porovnávané. Ďalej bol vypracovaný krátky dotazník, ktorý mal za úlohu zistiť, aké jazyky respondenti ovládajú a akými metódami sa učia čínsku výslovnosť. Následne boli rozoslané dotazníky a zozbierané nahrávky od zahraničných študentov počas pobytu v Číne. Pred začiatkom skúmania a porovnávania nahrávok, bola naštudovaná transkripcia IPA, ktorá bola pri skúmaní používaná. Po zozbieraní nahrávok boli porovnané a preskúmané spojitosti s odpoveďami z dotazníkov a rodený Číňan pomohol so zhodnotením nahrávok. Pri porovnávaní boli skúmané prípadné odlišnosti vo výslovnosti a ich možné dôvody. Chyby vo výslovnosti boli zobrazené v spektrogramoch a pomocou nich porovnávané so spektrogramami rodenej Číňanky. Následne boli výsledky spracované do tejto práce.
