Aesthetics of Ugliness in the Work of Gottfried Benn and August Strindberg

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce „Estetika ošklivosti v díle Gottfrieda Benna a Augusta Strindberga“ se zabývá dvěma expresionistickými autory, Bennem a Strindbergem, a jejich dílem s přihlédnutím na estetiku ošklivosti. Analyzuje pojmy krásy, ošklivosti a melancholie, které úzce souvisí spolu a také s tvorbou zmíněných expresionistů. V první části práce bude stručně analyzován pojem krásy, poté si přiblížíme pojem ošklivosti a její vztah ke krásnu, bude objasněn pojem melancholie, a proč je vlastně do této práce zařazena. V druhé části bude následovat samotný rozbor děl Gottfrieda Benna, zejména sbírka Básně, a Augusta Strindberga, zejména novela Osamělý. Práce bude rozebírat, jak je obecně chápán pojem ošklivosti a jak je pojat v období expresionismu, když ošklivé může být krásné.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis „Aesthetics of Ugliness in work of Gottfried Benn and August Strindberg“ deals with two expressionist authors, Benn and Strindberg, and their works considering the aesthetics of ugliness. It inspects terms beauty, ugliness and melancholy, which are all closely related to each other and also with the works of the expressionists. First part of the thesis briefly analyzes the term of beauty, the term of ugliness and its relation to beauty and the term of melancholy and its purpose in this thesis. Second part analyzes Benn's work, especially collection of poems Básně and Strindberg's work, especially novella Osamělý. The thesis analyzes general acceptation of the term ugliness and how it was understood in the era of expressionism, when the ugly can be beautiful.
