Embracing Western Thought: The Development of Japanese Identity in the Works by Kazuo Ishiguro and Ruth Ozeki

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je zdokumentování vývoje a transformace fenoménu národní identity v Japonsku, přičemž tato země zůstává i v dnešním moderním světě jednou z nejméně pochopených a proto udivujících kultur. Protože důsledkem silných kulturních protikladů jsou podobně silné názory a emoce, všeobecný přístup západního světa k záhadám japonské kultury se obvykle projevoval zdůrazňováním vyčnívajících rozdílů a ignorováním kulturních podobností. Tato tendence se přitom pojila především s přetrvávajícími myšlenkami, které vznikaly v průběhu éry západního imperialismu a v periodě nepřátelství pramenící z konfliktů druhé světové války. Nicméně, měnící se postoj současné společnosti, která je jednak charakteristická zvýšenou mírou globalizace a zároveň i opatrností při přejímaní jinakostí z ostatních kultur, souvisí s pověřením současných spisovatelů automaticky neakceptovat, nýbrž vyzývat strnulé vnímání japonské kultury a mentality. Tyto nesrovnalosti v pojetí japonské identity se staly klíčovými ve tvorbě Kazua Ishigura a Ruth Ozekiové, kteří ve svých příbězích zachycují proces transformace Japonska. Ishigurovo dílo The Pale View of Hills a román A Tale for the Time Being Ruth Ozekiové reflektují komplexní prožitky obou autorů, kteří vyrůstali na hraně mezi dvěma osobitými světy, přičemž získali zdvojenou perspektivu na věci týkající se japonské a západní identity. Tato diplomová práce zachycuje důležitý pokus autorů o přemostění dvou národů, kterých vztah byl po mnohé roky založen na nepochopení. Prostřednictvím rozšiřování obzorů svých čtenářů a objasňování vývoje spojitosti Japonska a západu se Ruth Ozekiová a Kazuo Ishiguro pokoušejí o objasnění a odhalení autentické identity Japonska, která přirozeně zahrnuje pozitivní i negativní jevy a zkušenosti.

Abstract:

The main aim of this diploma thesis is to trace the development and transformation of the notion of national identity in Japan, which is, even in today’s modernised world, considered to be one of the least comprehensible and therefore intriguing cultures. While strong contrasts evoke similarly strong emotions, the general attitude of the Western world towards the Japanese enigma has usually been typical of highlighting the sensational differences and ignoring the similarities. This tendency was primarily connected with the lingering ideas issued during the years of Western Imperialism and later by the hostilities of the Second World War. However, with the changing attitude of contemporary society, which becomes more and more globalised but also cautious of openly accepting the “other”, it becomes a quest of the authors of contemporary narratives to challenge the fossilized perception of the Japanese culture and mentality. The misconceptions surrounding Japanese identity prompted Kazuo Ishiguro and Ruth Ozeki to create narratives capturing the character of Japan’s transformation. Ishiguro’s The Pale View of Hills and Ozeki’s A Tale for the Time Being reflect the complex experience of both authors, who have lived on the borderline between two distinctive worlds while gaining a specific “doubled” perspective and an insight into the characteristics of both Japanese and Western identity. This thesis traces the important attempt of bridging the gap between two nations whose mutual perception was for a long time based on misunderstanding and misconception. Through the broadening of readers’ perspective and explication of the historical development of Japanese relationship with the West, Ruth Ozeki and Kazuo Ishiguro contribute to the recognition of authenticity of Japanese identity, embracing both the positives and negatives of their Japanese experience.
