Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce zkoumá, jakou roli hrají různé přízvuky v českém prostředí. Jak jej vnímají pokročilí uživatelé angličtiny a zda mají tendence k předsudkům a ná-sledné jazykové diskriminaci. Existují důkazy, že standardní i nestandardní britské přízvuky nejsou v rámci Spojeného království vnímány stejně. Lidé hovořící s výraz-ným přízvukem jsou tak často diskriminováni a nemají stejné možnosti. Cílem této práce je proto prozkoumat, jaké jsou postoje v českém prostředí a zda jsou i zde lidé s výrazným přízvukem diskriminováni.

Abstract:

The present diploma thesis examines the role of selected British accents in the Czech environment and how they are perceived by non-native speakers of English. It looks at whether or not Czech academics have the tendency to form biases leading towards linguistic discrimination. There are several instances where accents are not per-ceived equally within the United Kingdom. Thus, people speaking with distinct ac-cents are often discriminated against and are not given the same opportunities. Therefore, this thesis aims to investigate accent bias in the Czech environment.
