The Importance of Non-Profit Organizations for Regional Development

Abstract:

Diplomová práce se zabývá významem nestátních neziskových organizací pro rozvoj regionu (NGO). Pozornost je věnována zejména názorům vybraných skupin na význam neziskového sektoru na rozvoj Ústeckého kraje. Tento dokument nejprve vymezuje a definuje neziskový sektor jako takový, poté uvádí základní typy NGO. Dále je představen Ústecký kraj v kontextu různých koncepčních materiálů a definovány hlavní priority jeho rozvoje. V rámci praktické části jsou ověřovány výzkumné hypotézy diferencovatelnosti skupin stakeholderů sběrem dat. Více než sto respondentů vyplnilo dotazník inspirovaný škálou Bruninga a Gallowayové. Také byl proveden rozhovor s kompetentní osobou. Tato data jsou následně důsledně analyzována. Bylo zjištěno, že uživatelé služeb neziskových organizací vnímají sektor NGO statisticky významně pozitivněji než neuživatelé. Veřejný obraz neziskového sektoru je rozdílný také pro jednotlivé kraje. V neposlední řadě statisticky významné rozdíly nalezneme i mezi odpověďmi mužů a žen. Práce obsahuje také diskuzi nad metodologickými slabinami, které mohou být překážkou pro generalizaci získaných kvantitativních dat.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis focuses on the significance of non-governmental non-profit organizations for regional development (NGO). Specifically, it concentrates on the opinions of selected groups on the importance of the non-profit sector to the development of the Ústí nad Labem Region. This thesis first defines the non-profit sector and then states the basic types of NGOs. Next, the Ústí nad Labem Region is presented in the context of various conceptual materials and the main priorities of the region’s development are defined. The practical part verifies the research hypotheses of stakeholder groups’ differentiation by data collection. More than 100 respondents completed a questionnaire inspired by the Bruning and Galloway scale. Moreover, an interview with a competent person was conducted. These data were thoroughly analyzed. The results showed that the users of non-profit organizations’ services perceived the NGO sector statistically more positively than the non-users. The public image of the non-profit sector is also different for individual regions. Last, statistically significant differences can also be found between the responses of men and women. The thesis also contains a discussion of methodological weaknesses, which may be an obstacle when generalizing the obtained quantitative data.
