From the Bishop's seminary to the Brno University of Technology: The Neo-Baroque building on the 1 Antonínská street

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá novobarokní budovou na ulici Antonínská č. 1 v Brně a její historií od roku 1899 do současnosti. Sleduje počáteční období od roku 1899, kdy církev získala povolení ke stavbě nového biskupského alumnátu v Brně a v roce 1901 přistoupila k výstavbě, všímá si provozu budovy i problémů spojených s částečným užíváním budovy Masarykovou univerzitou. Zahrnuje období první i druhé světové války, které se nemalou měrou podepsaly na stavu budovy. Sleduje život za zdmi budovy od roku 1950, kdy byl alumnát již zrušen, zmiňuje instituce, které se pokusily získat uvolněné prostory, a dopad na další vývoj. Podrobněji se zaměřuje na působení Vysokého učení technického v Brně, resp. Centra VUT a na rozsáhlou rekonstrukci na přelomu let 1998–1999; v rámci novodobé historie popisuje archeologické nálezy v zahradní části v roce 1999 a pozdější archeologické nálezy v roce 2016 v prostranství před budovou. Cílem práce je prostřednictvím archivních materiálů (některých dosud nezpracovaných) postihnout na pozadí významných historických mezníků proměny zajímavé novobarokní stavby.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis deals with the neo-baroque building on Antonínská street No. 1 in Brno and its history from 1899 to the present. It follows the initial period since 1899 when the church obtained permission to build a new bishop's seminary in Brno and in 1903 proceeded to construction, observing the operation of the building and the problems connected with the partial use of the building by Masaryk University. It covers the period of World War I and World War II which influenced the state of the building. It follows the life of the building since 1950 when the bishop's seminary was abolished. The thesis mentions the institutions which tried to gain the premises and the impact on further developments. It focuses more closely on the activities of the Brno Technical University and its extensive reconstruction at the turn of 1998-1999; within the framework of modern history, it describes archaeological finds in the garden in 1999 and later archaeological finds in the front of the building in 2016. The aim of this work is to capture interesting neo-baroque buildings in the context of important historical milestones through archival materials (some of them have not been elaborated yet).
