Guided discovery method in grammar teaching B1 level students

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá tématem řízeného objevování, jeho strukturou a užitím v hodinách gramatiky angličtiny na úrovni B1. Práce je rozdělena na teoretickou a praktickou část, která aplikuje teoretické poznatky na analýzu dvou vybraných učebnic. Teoretická část detailněji popisuje metodu řízeného objevování a zasazuje ji do kontextu dalších metod výuky a přístupů k výuce. Teoretická část je rozdělena na dvě kapitoly, jimiž jsou Výuka gramatiky, která se soustředí na vývoj výuky angličtiny od gramaticko-překladové metody až po dnešní komunikativní vyučování a na induktivní a deduktivní přístup k vyučování angličtiny. Ve druhé kapitole, Techniky prezentace gramatiky, jsou blíže popsány metody prezentace gramatiky na základě textu, situační prezentace a řízeného objevování. Praktická část aplikuje poznatky z teoretické části na podrobnou analýzu učebnic Face2face a New Headway úrovně intermediate. Jejím cílem bylo zanalyzovat využití řízeného objevování pro prezentaci gramatiky v jednotlivých učebnicích, do jaké míry tuto metodu využívají a na jaké gramatické struktury ji aplikují. V závěru práce jsou posouzeny analýzy jednotlivých učebnic, učebnice jsou kontrastivně porovnány a jedna z učebnic je doporučena jako vhodnější pro užití v hodinách s použitím řízeného objevování.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis elaborates on the guided discovery method, its structure and usage in English grammar lessons on the B1 level. The thesis is divided into theoretical and empirical part, which applies the theoretical findings to an analysis of two selected student’s books. The theoretical part describes in more detail the guided discovery method and embeds it in the context of approaches to teaching and further teaching methods. Theoretical part holds two chapters which are Grammar Teaching which focuses on English teaching development from grammar-translation method to today’s communicative teaching and deductive and inductive approach to English teaching. And chapter Grammar Presentation Techniques which closely describes grammar teaching methods as presentation via text, presentation via situation and guided discovery. The empirical part applies the theoretical findings to detailed analysis of Face2face Intermediate and New Headway Intermediate Student’s Books. The purpose of the empirical part was to analyse usage of guided discovery method for grammar presentation in the individual Student’s Books, to what degree are the books using the guided discovery method and what grammar structure do the books use it for. The conclusion evaluates analysis of each Student’s Book, both Student’s Books are contrasted and compared, and one of the books is recommended as more suitable for grammar teaching via guided discovery method.
