Disabilities through the Prism of TEFL Educators

Abstract:

This diploma theses aims to investigate the ways of teaching English as a foreign language in classes where pupils with specific learning disabilities are integrated. The objective is to examine what methods, styles of work and types of assessment are chosen by high school teachers when teaching English to pupils with specific learning disabilities. In the theoretical part of this thesis is the definition of SLDs, their causes and individual manifestations; legislation related to pupils with learning disabilities and their assessment; the means and principles of teaching English to pupils with learning disabilities, all of this predominantly from the perspective of high school education. In the practical part there is a description of the results of the research that was carried out in the form of observations while sitting in on a class and subsequent interviews with teachers at a selected high school. The main aim of the present thesis and its qualitative research was to discover how the principles of English language teaching and assessment of pupils with specific learning disabilities in high school education are applied in practice.

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce má za cíl vyšetřit způsoby výuky anglického jazyka jako cizího jazyka ve třídách s integrovanými žáky se specifickými poruchami učení. Cílem je vyzkoumat jaké metody a styly práce a typy hodnocení volí učitelé středních škol při výuce žáků se specifickými poruchami učení. V teoretické části této práce je definice SPU, jejich příčiny a individuální projevy; legislativa vztahující se k žákům se specifickými poruchami učení a jejich hodnocení; způsoby a principy výuky anglického jazyka u žáků s poruchami učení, toto vše převážně z pohledu středoškolského vzdělávání. V praktické části jsou popsány výsledky výzkumu, který byl proveden formou náslechů a následných rozhovorů s učiteli ve vybrané střední škole. Hlavním cílem této diplomové práce a jejího kvalitativního výzkumu bylo zjistit, jak jsou v praxi uplatňovány principy výuky anglického jazyka a hodnocení žáků se specifickými poruchami učení ve středoškolském vzdělávání.
