Algorithm design and implementation for medical education data analysis and comparison

Abstract:

Práce se zabývá analýzou textových dat, konkrétně automatizovaným zpracováním popisu medicínského kurikula. Kvalitní lékařské péče nelze dosáhnout bez kvalitního vzdělání lékařů, tedy výuky medicíny. Nicméně navrhnout a spravovat vyvážené kurikulum je vzhledem ke komplexnosti a objemu popisu velmi náročné. Cílem práce je optimalizovat vstupní data a následně vytvořit nástroj, který umožní analyzovat jednotlivé části kurikula a pomůže tak odkrýt případné obsahové překryvy či nedostatky, a to jak v porovnání se stávajícím kurikulem, tak se vstupem zadaným uživatelem. V rámci důkladné přípravy dat je uplatněn vlastní seznam tzv. stop slov. Pro účely agregace slov se stejným významem je použita kombinace stemovacích algoritmů Porter a Lovins a dále je vytvořena speciální funkce k transformaci z kmene na celé slovo. Výstupem algoritmu je jednak sumarizace daného bloku výuky pomocí několika nejfrekventovanějších slov a jednak reprezentace vztahů mezi jednotkami, který blok tvoří, prostřednictvím dendrogramu. Vedle přístupu, který pro sumarizaci a určení podobnosti používá frekvenci slov, je představena varianta, která atributům popisu přisuzuje různou váhu. Práce dále diskutuje možnosti použití algoritmu v praxi.

Abstract:

This thesis is concerned with text data analysis, in particular automated processing of medical curriculum description. High-quality medical care is dependent on doctors receiving an appropriate medical education. However, designing and maintaining a well-balanced curriculum is a difficult task given its complexity and magnitude. The aim of this thesis is to optimize data input and subsequently create a tool that provides analysis of the individual parts of a curriculum and helps to discover overlaps or gaps in content by either comparing it to a current curriculum or an entry provided by user. During thorough data preprocessing a so-called stop word list is created and applied. A combination of the Porter and Lovins stemming algorithms is employed to aggregate words of the same meaning; and to transform the stem into a complete word a special function is built. The algorithm output is a summarization of a given educational block to the few most frequent words and a representation of relations of units that form the block via a dendrogram. In addition to the term frequency approach for documents summarizing and comparing a version that assigns distinct weight to attributes is introduced. This thesis also discusses the usage of the algorithm in practice.
