Autor práce kombinuje chronologické a žánrové hledisko a analyzuje rozsáhlý soubor pramenů, které připisují nejrůznějším "heretickým" skupinám dualistické víry. Zároveň sleduje zrod slova "kataři" a jeho šíření protikacířskou literaturou. Abstract:
"Dualism" is thought to be the main feature of Catharism. By using the vague notion of "dualism", the scholars, medieval and contemporary, construct a coherent movement. But there is also another "reason" for dualism: it was used by the makers of the Christian society in the 12th and 13th centuries to define their own identity by contrast to a non-constructive, elitist "Cathar sect".
