Lactation and Breast-feeding in Humans: Effects Associated with the Infant's Sex

Abstract:

Breastfeeding is the most natural way to nourish newborns and infants. Several studies have shown that the composition of breast milk varies depending on the mother's nutritional status, ethnicity, and geographical location. However, there are also studies that have been carried out in different mammalian species, as well as in humans, which indicate that the composition and amount of breast milk also differs depending on the infant's sex. Contrariwise, some authors hold an opinion that the infant's sex has no effect on lactation and breastfeeding, and therefore the composition and amount of breast milk do not differ. In this bachelor thesis, we focused on detecting the possible influence of infant sex on breastfeeding and lactation on a sample of 93 mothers and 220 children from the Slovak and the Czech Republic. We have found that the frequency of breastfeeding of boys and girls is the same, but boys drink more milk during one breastfeeding. There was also no difference in the age of weaning of boys and girls and the supplementation of minerals and vitamins in the infant's diet. Statistically significant differences were observed in the supplementation of minerals, vitamins and omega 3 fatty acid (by mothers),supplementation of which was higher when breastfeeding girls.

Abstract:

Kojení je nepřirozenější způsob výživy novorozenců a kojenců. Mnohé studie prokázaly, že se složení mateřského mléka liší v závislosti na stavu výživy matky, etnické příslušnosti a geografické polohy. Existují však i studie, které byly uskutečněny na různých druzích savců, včetně člověka, podle kterých se složení a množství mateřského mléka liší i v závislosti na pohlaví kojence. Jiní autoři naopak došli k závěru, že pohlaví kojence nemá žádný vliv na laktaci při kojení a že složení a množství mateřského mléka se v závislosti na pohlaví kojence neliší. V této bakalářské práci jsme se zaměřili na zjištění možných rozdílů v kojení a laktaci v závislosti na pohlaví kojence. Studie byla založena na dotazníkovém šetření vzorku 93 matek a 220 dětí ze Slovenské a České republiky. Zjistili jsme, že frekvence kojení chlapců a dívek byla stejná, ale chlapci vypili více mléka během jednoho kojení. Nelišil se ani věk odstavu chlapců a dívek, ani celková suplementace minerálních látek a vitamínů ve stravě kojenců. Statisticky významné rozdíly jsme však zaznamenali v suplementaci některých minerálních látek, vitamínů a omega3 mastných kyselin ve stravě matek, jejichž suplementace byla vyšší při kojení dívek.
