Selected theatre designs of Janáček’s opera “The Cunning Little Vixen” in the theatres of Brno

Abstract:

Hlavním cílem mé práce bylo věnovat se vybraným scénografiím Janáčkovy opery Příhody lišky Bystroušky na brněnských scénách. Z řady inscenací, které vznikly od dob první inscenace po současnost, jsem záměrně zvolila samotnou světovou premiéru z roku 1924 v dnešním Mahenově divadle, jejíž scénickou výpravu vytvořil Eduard Milén. V pořadí druhý scénografický počin, který jsem si vybrala, byl vytvořen anglickým scénografem Neilem Irishem a byl uvdeden v roce 2008 v Janáčkově divadle. Poslední scénografie patří studentům Hudební fakulty Janáčkovy akademie v Brně, kteří v rámci sdružení Komorní opera uvedli komorní verzi této opery v Bezbariérovém divadle Barka v roce 2006. U vybraných scénografií detailně popisuji jejich funkčnost, barevnost, styl, v jakém jsou scéna i kostýmy vytvořeny a jejich způsob vyjádření hlavní myšlenky operního díla. Dále také prezentuji, a pokud je to přínosné porovnávám prvky, které scénografie vzájemně propojují nebo naopak odlišují. Kromě popisu scénických výprav jsem ve své práci prezentovala také okolnosti, za kterých vznikly. U Eduarda Miléna šlo o dobu, ve které tvořil, u Neila Irishe zase o národnost a odlišné pojetí tradičního českého díla. Ve studentském zpracování Bena Blachuta ml. a Ilony Vaňkové hrála důležitou roli finanční situace a omezené prostředky.

Abstract:

The main idea of my work was to focus on certain theatre designs of Janáček’s opera “The Cunning Little Vixen” in the theatres of Brno. Out of many variations that originated after the first one to the present day, I intentionally chose the world premiere in 1924. This very first performance took place in today’s Mahen theatre and its stage setting was created by Eduard Milén. The second scenography I dealt with is a creation of an English scenographer Neil Irish. This work was introduced in 2008 in Janáček theatre. The last stage design, I devoted my work to, belongs to the students of Faculty of Music of Janáček Academy of Music and Performing Arts in Brno. Their chamber variation of the opera was presented in Barka Disabled Access Theatre in 2006. By the selected designs, I describe in detail their functionality, color, style in which the stage and costumes were created. Moreover, I deal with the way those elements interpret the main idea of the opera. Further, I present, and if valuable, compare those aspects that either link the variations with each other or differentiate them. Besides describing the stage designs, I presented in my work also the circumstances under which they originated. The era was important by Eduard Milén, whereas by Neil Irish his nationality and a different concept of the tradition Czech work were significant. In the last, student, variation of Beno Blachut jr. and Ilona Vaňková, I focused on the financial aspect of concept of the opera.
