The possibilities for dialogue and brotherhood between Christians and Muslims

Abstract:

Ve své práci nejprve shrnu základní vývoj ve vztazích mezi křesťany a muslimy s následným popisem problematiky a definic dialogu a bratrství v obou náboženských tradicích. Následovat bude uvedení překážek a pozitiv, jimž dialog a bratrství mezi křesťany a muslimy čelí. Následně popíši analýzu postoje papeže Františka a Gülena k dialogu a bratrství. Poté provedu shrnutí obou autorů, a nakonec objasním praktické výzvy, jež stojí před křesťany i muslimy v návaznosti na myšlenky obou autorů. Hlavními zdroji názorů papeže Františka a Fethullaha Gülena jsou jednak jejich autorské knihy, jednak jejich rozhovory či autorské články v on-line mediích. Zdroji k jednotlivým podtématům jsou autorské práce českých a světových osobností věnujících se tématu islámu a křesťanství.

Abstract:

Relations between Christians and Muslims are nowadays increasingly important, not only for members of these two religious groups but for the rest of the world as well. In the context of all this, it is even more important today to recall the meaning of "revelation" and its correct interpretation. And on top of this, it is also necessary to examine the possibilities of dialogue and brotherhood between Christians and Muslims - as two great, missionary and (most importantly) asserting themselves to be revealed religions (sent from God). Also, this exploration (of the possibility of dialogue and brotherhood between Christians and Muslims) is important for Europe itself and especially the European Union, in the context of coexistence of the growing Muslim community and its value diversity. I chose Pope Francis as the representative of the Christians logically not only because of his position within the Catholic community and the Catholic Church, but also because he is the most expressive global speaker on the issues of dialogue and brotherhood between Christians and Muslims. As for a Muslim representative I chose the Turkish Muslim theologian and thinker Fethullah Gülen. Despite certain controversies associated with his person, Gülen is still an inspiring Muslim theologian and thinker for millions of Muslims (mostly with Turkish roots) not only in Turkey, but also in the USA and the European Union. In my work, I summarized the basic development in the relations between Christians and Muslims, followed by the description of issues and definitions of the dialogue and brotherhood in both religious traditions. This is followed by a presentation of obstacles and positives ahead the dialogue and brotherhood between Christians and Muslims. Subsequently, I describe the analysis of the attitudes of Pope Francis and Gülen towards the dialogue and brotherhood. I conclude by summarizing both authors, and finally I describe practical challenges facing both Christians and Muslims.
