Nutrient stress and its conseqence for plant water relations

Abstract:

Deficience minerálních živin má negativní vliv na řadu procesů v rostlinách a vede například ke zpomalení růstu, zpomalení tvorby sekundárních metabolitů či zmenšení plodů. Tyto negativní dopady se na rostlinách projeví v řádu dnů až týdnů. V 90. letech minulého století se však podařilo prokázat změny, které probíhají výrazně rychleji – v řádu hodin. Zatímco zpomalený nárůst biomasy v nadzemních částech rostliny se projeví nejčastěji až po několika dnech deficience nové experimenty zaznamenaly reakci na nedostatek minerálních živin téměř od počátku experimentu. Jednalo se o pokles hydraulické vodivosti kořenů, tedy ovlivnění rychlosti příjmu vody do rostliny, při nedostatku dusíku a fosforu. K výraznému posunu v porozumění tomuto jevu pak došlo po objevení akvaporínů. Jejich aktivita je totiž regulovatelná ve velmi krátkém čase, čímž se dá vysvětlit mechanismus rychlého poklesu hydraulické vodivosti. Pokles hydraulické vodivosti byl zaznamenán i u dalších deficiencí živin například síry a draslíku. Nejvíce poznatků však bylo získáno při sledování reakcí na deficienci dusíku a fosforu. Po více než 20 letech výzkumu je tato oblast stále nedostatečně prozkoumána. Tato práce shrnuje v aktuálně dostupné poznatky o této problematice a také současné hypotézy vysvětlující vztah mezi poklesem hydraulické vodivosti kořene a deficiencí minerálních živin, zejména na příkladu deficience dusíku a fosforu.

Abstract:

Deficiency of mineral nutrients has a negative effect on many processes in plants including decrease of growth rate, decrease in production of secondary metabolites or reduction in size of fruits. These negative effects can be observed within periods of days or weeks. In the end of 20th century was discovered a new, much faster impact of nutrient deficiency on plants that takes effect within hours. Whereas slower growth can be observed after several days of defficiency the new experiments discovered the response to mineral deficiency nearly from the beginning of the experiment. The hydraulic conductivity of root system was decreased, and hence water uptake by plant affected, as a consequence of nitrogen and phosphorus deficiency. Considerable step forward in this research was done after the discovery of aquaporins. The activity of these transport proteins can be regulated rapidly, which can explain mechanism of fast changes in hydraulic conductivity. Decrease of hydraulic conductivity was observed also during sulphur and potassium deficiency but the most information is still available about response to N and P defficiency. After more than 20 years of research work, are mechanisms in this are still poorly understood. This thesis summarizes recently available knowledge about this topic and also current hypotheses about mechanisms behind rapid decrease of hydraulic conductivity namely under N and P deficiency.
