Filming in Kutná Hora or the town of Kutná Hora in movies by Otakar Vávra and Karel Kachyňa

Abstract:

Předmětem bakalářské práce je rozbor dvou žánrově rozličných snímků, které se natáčely v Kutné Hoře a to především u kostela sv. Jakuba. Prvním filmem je Cech panen kutnohorských v režii Otakara Vávry a druhým je Fany v režii Karla Kachyni. V úvodní části shrnujeme historický kontext města. Dále pak filmový turismus v Kutné Hoře. Vztah mezi historií města a natáčením filmů v dané lokaci je především v díle Otakara Vávry nepřehlédnutelný. Na základě výstřižků z tisku archivovaných v knihovně Národního filmového archivu se rozebraly i vedlejší témata ve filmech, která úzce souvisí s dobou vzniku jednotlivých snímků. Srovnáním filmových a autorských fotografií z Kutné Hory zachycující město v různých časových epochách vzniká dokumentace filmové lokace, která oslovuje zahraniční a tuzemské filmaře.

Abstract:

The topic of this thesis is an analysis of two films of different genres which were made in Kutná Hora, largely by the Saint Jacob’s church. The first of them is The Guild of Kutná Hora Virgins by Otakar Vávra and the second film is Fany by Karel Kachyňa. In the first part of the thesis, the author summarises the historical context of the town and, further, the phenomenon of film tourism in Kutná Hora. The link between the town’s history and the motivation for making a film in this location is noticeable especially in Otakar Vávra’s film. The thesis uses press articles stored in the National Film Archive to further elaborate collateral topics of the films, which are closely influenced by the period of time, in which they were made. By comparing film and author’s photographs of Kutná Hora, which capture the town in different periods of time, the author has created a documentation of this film location, which attracts both filmmakers from the Czech Republic and from abroad.
