Liking, Sharing, Body Comparing? Impact of Appearance-Focused Social Media Interactions on Adolescents’ Body Image

Abstract:

Vzhledem k citlivosti dospívajících na zpětnou vazbu od vrstevníků, která se týká fyzického vzhledu, jsou adolescenti citliví vůči sociálním médiím zobrazující visuální obsah. Tato disertační práce zkoumá interakce na sociálních médiích zaměřené na vzhled a jejich dopady na vnímání vlastního těla (body image), stejně tak jako na jejich vnímání těl ostatních během adolescence. Otázky jsou řešeny ve třech studiích využívajících kvantitativní experimentální a longitudinální výzkumné designy. Disertační práce staví na Tripartite Influence Model of Body Image (Thompson et al., 1999) a jeho následné adaptaci na kontext online médií (Rodgers, 2016). První studie zjistila, že vystavení pozitivním komentářům chválícím idealizovaná těla na sociálních médiích posilovalo nespokojenost s vlastním tělem u dospívajících dívek, ale ne u chlapců. Tyto efekty nebyly moderovány mírou internalizace tělesných ideálů, oceňováním vlastního těla ani tzv. appearance shematicity, což naznačuje možný význam dalších individuálních faktorů, jako je citlivost na odmítnutí fyzického vzhledu. Z longitudinální perspektivy druhá studie zkoumala aktivity na sociálních médiích spojené se vzhledem, včetně sledování komentářů ostatních k idealizovaným tělům a reakce prostřednictvím lajků, komentářů a zveřejňování takového obsahu. Zatímco na mezi-subjektové úrovni byly pozorovány významné souvislosti mezi těmito aktivitami, internalizací tělesných ideálů ze sociálních médií a porovnáváním se s těmito ideály, na vnitro-subjektové úrovni se tyto efekty v průběhu času neprojevily. Internalizace a srovnávání vzhledu nemediovaly vztah mezi těmito aktivitami a nespokojeností s tělem. Třetí studie došla částečně ke stejným závěrům jako druhá studie. Ukázala, že interakce s tzv. body positivity obsahy a pozitivními komentáři na vzhled bylo na mezi-subjektové úrovni spojeno se zvýšenými prosociálními tendencemi vůči vzhledu ostatních, avšak tyto efekty se v čase na vnitro-subjektové úrovni neukázaly. Zjištění disertace naznačily, že interakce na sociálních médiích zaměřené na vzhled hrají složitou roli v body image adolescentů. Zatímco mohou posilovat nereálné ideály krásy a přispívat k nespokojenosti s tělem u některých adolescentů, ti, kteří se do těchto interakcí zapojují, zároveň častěji projevují prosociální přístup k tělům ostatních. Zjištění této práce mají význam pro budoucí výzkum, tvorbu teorií a praktické intervence, přičemž zdůrazňují potřebu reflektovat jak pozitivní, tak negativní dopady vzhledových obsahů na sociálních médiích– obzvláště s ohledem na rozporuplné zprávy, které tento obsah často zobrazuje.

Abstract:

Given the developmental sensitivities to peer feedback and appearance cues, adolescents are vulnerable to visually-oriented social media. This dissertation examines appearance-focused social media interactions and their impact on adolescents’ self-oriented components of body image and those directed toward the bodies of others. These questions are addressed in three studies employing quantitative experimental and longitudinal research designs. Rooted in the Tripartite Influence Model of Body Image (Thompson et al., 1999) and its subsequent adaptation to online media contexts (Rodgers, 2016), the first study found that exposure to positive appearance comments praising idealized bodies on social media reinforced body dissatisfaction among adolescent girls, but not boys. Unexpectedly, the effects of these comments were not moderated by the tendency to internalize media ideals, appearance schematicity, and body appreciation, pointing towards the possible relevance of other individual factors, such as appearance-based rejection sensitivity. Taking a longitudinal perspective, the second study investigated appearance-related activity on social media, including viewing others’ comments on idealized bodies and adolescents’ engagement through liking, commenting on, and posting such content. While significant associations were observed between appearance activity, internalization of social media body-ideals, and comparison with these ideals at the between-person level, these effects did not emerge at the within-person level over time. Notably, this study did not support internalization and appearance comparison as mediators between appearance activity and body dissatisfaction. The third study somewhat mirrored the second, revealing that engagement with body-positivity content and positive appearance comments may be linked to increased prosocial intentions toward others' appearance at the between-person level yet do not translate into the within-person effects over time. In summary, appearance-focused social media interactions play an intricate role in adolescents' body image. While these interactions can reinforce unrealistic beauty ideals and contribute to body dissatisfaction in some adolescents, those who engage with them also tend to show a more prosocial approach toward others’ bodies. The present findings offer implications for future research, theory-building efforts, and practical interventions, emphasizing the need to address both the beneficial and adverse roles of engaging with appearance-related social media content, especially in light of the contradictory messages such content often features.
