Do That Machine Got a Song to Sing? The Meaning of Technology Resistance in U.S. American Culture

Abstract:

Moje disertační práce zkoumá strukturu americko-amerického diskurzu proti technologiím a odhaluje aspekty individuální a komunitní zkušenosti viděné v ohrožení kvůli technovědním znalostem a vývoji. Ukazuji, jak antitechnologický diskurz napříč historií Spojených států rozšiřuje témata romantismu a realismu, dvou prominentních reakcí na racionalizaci, kterou rozpoutalo osvícenství. Antitechnologický diskurz využívá zbožštění přirozeného já a přírodního světa romantismem a kritiku průmyslové ekonomiky realismem. Prostřednictvím případových studií se ptám na čtyři témata: 1. antitechnické výrazy v rané americké americké literatuře, před revolucí do roku 1912; 2. léčba lidové pohádky člověk vs. stroj po občanské válce, Balada o Johnu Henrym z let 1870 až 2013; 3. antitelevizní aktivismus ve druhé polovině 20. století; a 4. diskurs bloggerů a dalších online aktérů v 21. století proti digitálnímu životu. V každém z těchto případů zkoumám, jak aktéři používají kulturně smysluplné narativy a kódy, aby se postavili technologickému dopadu společenského života. V průběhu čtyř studií zkoumám diskurzivní data reprezentující historii Spojených států. Mým teoretickým přístupem je kulturní sociologie, která kulturu považuje za nezávislou proměnnou formující jednání jednotlivců a skupin. Teorie kulturní pragmatiky Jeffreyho Alexandra a teorie občanské sféry konkrétně formují můj přístup. Pomocí metody tlustého popisu artikuluji strukturu posvátných a profánních binárních dvojic, které poskytují scénáře hercům provádějícím antitechnická prohlášení. Můj závěr obsahuje tabulku ilustrující kulturně informovanou binární strukturu antitechnologického diskurzu v americké společnosti.

Abstract:

My dissertation investigates the structure of U.S. American anti-technology discourse, revealing the aspects of individual and community experience seen under threat due to technoscientific knowledge and development. I show how anti-technology discourse across the history of the United States extends the themes of Romanticism and Realism, two prominent responses to the rationalization unleashed by the Enlightenment. Anti-technology discourse uses Romanticism’s deification of the natural self and natural world and Realism’s critique of the industrial economy. I make my inquiry via case studies into four topics: 1. anti-technoscientific expressions in Early U.S. American literature, pre-Revolution to 1912; 2. treatments of the post-Civil War man vs. machine folktale, The Ballad of John Henry spanning 1870 to 2013; 3. anti-television activism in the latter half of the 20th century; and 4. the anti-digital life discourse of bloggers and other online actors in the 21st century. In each these cases, I examine how actors employ culturally meaningful narratives and codes to oppose technological impacts impact of social life. Over the course of the four studies, I examine discursive data representative of the history of the United States. My theoretical approach is one of cultural sociology, treating culture as an independent variable shaping the actions of individuals and groups. Jeffrey Alexander’s theory of cultural pragmatics and the theory of the civil sphere specifically inform my approach. Employing a method of thick description, I articulate the structure of sacred and profane binary pairs which provide scripts to actors making anti-technoscientific statements. My conclusion features a table illustrating the culture-informed binary structure of anti-technology discourse in U.S. American society.
